Zenith's Defy Extreme hits the ground running in 2021 as the high-testosterone sibling of the already dynamic, durable, high-performance Defy line. The Defy Extreme debuted as a 1/100th of a second chronograph with two escapements, powered by a more complex high-frequency chronograph movement with two independent tourbillon mechanisms. Available in brushed titanium or smooth black carbon fiber with sandblasted rose gold trim, the Defy Extreme Double Tourbillon is powered by Zenith's most advanced chronograph movement to date, with a 60-second tourbillon and a 5-second tourbillon.

Following the launch of the iconic El Primero 5Hz movement in 1969, the high-frequency chronograph became a fundamental aspect of Zenith's identity. Determined to leverage its strengths in the field, the 50Hz frequency movement – Defy El Primero 21 – was launched in 2017, offering readouts accurate to 1/100th of a second, a double-balanced architecture, a slower 5Hz regulator and chronograph A 50Hz regulator with a faster beating speed, and two barrels.

The Defy Extreme line arrives in 2021 and takes the already challenging Defy into more aggressive territory, with its massive 45mm case measuring 15.4mm thick with sharp edges and a 12-sided base beneath the bezel. Combined with a skeletonized dial and equipped with the El Primero 9004 movement, this extraordinary 1/100th of a second chronograph stands out from the crowd thanks to its two escapements - one beating the chronograph at 360,000vph and the other at 36,000vph time jump.

Two years later, Zenith upped the ante even further with the Defy El Primero Double Tourbillon, featuring two tourbillon regulators. Technically impressive and visually striking, the Defy El Primero Double Tourbillon marks Zenith's pinnacle of innovative Haute Horlogerie.

DEFY EXTREME DOUBLE TOURBILLON
Today, the Defy Extreme series is upgraded to the brand's most advanced and complex high-frequency chronograph movement. Protected by a more robust 200m water-resistant habitat, the Zenith proves that high-end complications and bold modern style can go hand in hand.

Two watches, one in black carbon fiber with 18k brushed rose gold trim and the other in brushed titanium, house a sophisticated El Primero 9020 complication. Like the other Defy Extreme cases, the case measures 45mm in diameter, marked by acute angles and a 12-sided ring below the bezel. The angular chronograph pushers are protected by a contrasting material that complements that of the dodecagonal ring.

The skeletonized dial with tinted transparent sapphire allows a view of the majority of the movement, including the two tourbillon mechanisms with star frames. Thanks to its ingenious double architecture, the chronograph and chronograph mechanisms are independent, with their own barrel, gear train and tourbillon regulator, meaning there is no interaction between the chronograph movement and the chronograph.

On the one hand, the chronograph movement runs at 36,000 vibrations per hour or 5Hz, completes one revolution in 60 seconds, and has a power reserve of 50 hours. The chronograph movement, on the other hand, runs at an astounding 360,000 vibrations per hour, or 50Hz, and spins around the dial in a lightning-quick five seconds. The chronograph is capable of displaying precise readings to 1/100th of a second and has a 50-minute power reserve indicated by a noon power-reserve gauge.
