Theoretically, it exists so that free agents can begin negotiations with clubs around the league to suss out their market value prior to the beginning of free agency. In reality, players and agents have been back-channeling with teams for months and already have a good idea of A) their market value and B) who they’d like to sign with well before the window to negotiate opens two days before the start of the new league year. That’s why fully negotiated complex deals are reported within minutes of the opening of “legal tampering”. Besides this being a ridiculous system that teams don’t really follow, but have to give the appearance of following, it can also open the door for some tricky situations. The contracts that were reported on Monday and Tuesday across the league this are nothing more than non-binding verbal agreements until the player is permitted to sign on the proverbial dotted line starting at 3:00 PM CT on Wednesday. As the Jets found out with Anthony Barr, changes of heart can happen and there is just nothing teams can do about it. Therein lies the problem of the legal tampering window. Because these deals all get leaked to the media almost immediately and generally include very specific contract details, suddenly every team that was previously chasing that player knows exactly what the final price was. Previously, the team that lost out was relying on the word of the player’s agent to know what the other offers were — and there is no doubt some bluffing that goes on in these negotiations — but now they know the numbers with certainty and there is nothing stopping them from jumping back in and beating that deal after the fact up until the “official” start of free agency. That’s exactly what happened with Adam Humphries and the Patriots over the last couple days according to reports. The first rumblings of this came from Patriots beat reporter Evan Lazar who described Humphries as “having second thoughts” on his commitment to sign with Tennessee.Shortly after that tweet made the rounds, Paul Kuharsky clarified the Titans view of the situation. Finally, Doug Kyed, who covers the Patriots for NESN.com followed up with some additional information. I will emphasize here that Humphries has not yet officially signed his deal — the Titans will announce that as soon as it happens — but all reports are now indicating that he will be playing football in Tennessee in 2019. So reading between the lines a little bit here, it sounds like the Titans and Humphries agreed to his four-year, $36M contract on Monday after winning a bidding war against the Patriots. Then on Tuesday the Patriots came back and beat the Titans offer, putting both a higher average salary and more guaranteed money on the table to try to entice him to back out of his agreement with Jon Robinson. Humphries turned them down and chose to honor his commitment to the Titans. This is obviously a very interesting situation and I have some thoughts. First, dirty move by the Patriots. I’m not sure how much of this goes on around the league, but trying to backdoor a deal that’s already been negotiated and agreed to is a snake move where I come from. I’m certainly not surprised that the Pats would be the team to pull something like this though. It reeks of the Josh McDaniels situation after the Super Bowl last year except with a different end result this time.Second, there has never been a better evaluator of slot receiver talent in the history of football than Bill Belichick. Since he arrived in New England in 2000, there have been a constant stream of highly productive slot receivers that have come through that system. It started with Troy Brown and then continued with Deion Branch, Wes Welker, Danny Amendola, and finally Adoree' Jackson Jersey White , reigning Super Bowl MVP Julian Edelman. The fact that Belichick was so desperate to get Humphries on board to be Edelman’s counterpart in the short term and heir apparent in the long term should make Titans fans feel pretty good about the player they’re about to add. It also spoils Bill Barnwell’s little narrative about why the Humphries addition was just a “C-” for the Titans:Finally, this tells us that when the Titans — knocks on wood — do get Humphries signature in the very near future, they’ll be getting the signature of a person who honors his word. Jon Robinson and Mike Vrabel frequently talk about football character and the team treating players how they treat the team. I would guess that the team and Titans fans are going to treat Humphries pretty well after this. The New York Jets' starting QB is TBD for Sunday.Sam Darnold and Josh McCown were both limited at practice for the second straight day, leaving it uncertain who will be under center at Tennessee.Coach Todd Bowles said Thursday that Darnold, McCown and Davis Webb each had snaps and ran the offense during drills."We'll see who's the healthiest," Bowles said. "All of them are taking reps right now and we'll make that decision as the week goes."It would appear the choice will come down to either Darnold or McCown, especially since Webb hasn't yet taken a regular-season snap in the NFL and was on the practice squad until Darnold was hurt.Darnold has missed the past two games with a strain in his right foot. He showed progress Wednesday by participating in team drills for the first time since being injured against Miami on Nov. 4. Bowles said Darnold had no soreness in the foot Thursday, and wouldn't rule out starting the rookie even if he's limited Friday."I'll see how he feels, how it goes and how he looks in practice," Bowles said, "and I'll make that determination."McCown is dealing with a sore hand and back. His right hand was cut when he banged it on a helmet during the Jets' loss last Sunday to New England. McCown played through it, though, and could be in line for his third straight start if Darnold isn't ready to play.Bowles didn't seem overly concerned about the quarterback situation and whether it puts the Jets in a tough situation by having two of them limited at practice at this point in the practice week."No," Bowles said simply, "we're good."New York got some positive news on the injury front with wide receiver Robby Anderson (ankle) and running back Trenton Cannon (hamstring) both returning to practice on a limited basis after sitting out Wednesday. Wide receiver Quincy Enunwa (ankle) had a full practice a day after being limited.Andre Roberts, New York's primary returner on special teams, was limited with a foot issue 鈥?a new injury Thursday."He was sore," Bowles said. "He was nicked up a little bit, so we kind of held him back some."On defense, it appears safety Marcus Maye will miss his second straight game with shoulder and thumb injuries. He didn't practice again Thursday and Bowles acknowledged "it doesn't look good" for the second-year player's chances of playing.Linebacker Jordan Jenkins (shoulder) had a full practice a day after being limited.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are coming off their second straight complete game in which they played complimentary football and to no surprise Vernon Hargreaves Jersey , they are 2-0 in the last two weeks. The team currently sits at 5-7, and while the playoffs are still a long shot, if the Buccaneers win next weekend, they will be at most a game out of the sixth seed in the NFC. Of course, it won’t be an easy task as the New Orleans Saints are coming into town. The biggest turnaround in the last two games have been forcing turnovers and not turning the ball over. The Buccaneers are +5 combined in the last two games in that category. Jameis Winston is arguably playing the cleanest ball of his career in the last two and a half weeks and head coach Dirk Koetter was praising Winston today and his ability to make big time throws during his day after press conference. “When Jameis [Winston] stepped up, that’s something that Monk (Todd Monken) works with those guys all the time – Chris converted right away to scramble rules and that was it. That was a heck of a throw by Jameis.,” Koetter said. “That ball had a lot more juice on it than you might think. He had to throw it over the corner and back end zone and the safety was over there to the left. That ball had a lot on it, so that was a little tougher catch than it probably looked like.”Winston was also the Buccaneers leading rusher yesterday as he finished the game with five carries for 48 yards. He has been really effective the last two games at recognizing when plays break down and tucking it and running. Another thing he has improved on while doing that is protecting the football. Koetter commented today on Winston’s ability to scramble.“I think the key to those scrambles is that once you get through the traffic, how quickly you get your eyes back downfield. Then there a lot of moving part there’s because there’s always those guys chasing you,” Koetter said. “He’s gotten stripped from behind before, so he’s doing a lot better job of keeping two hands on the ball and then he’s keeping his eyes downfield and then very rarely now is he drifting and running sideways. He’s getting north and south and making quick decisions.”A few weeks ago, Koetter stated that many teams do not go to their backup quarterback simply because they don’t like them Warren Sapp Jersey , but the Buccaneers don’t fall under that criteria. Cam Newton looked similar (4 interceptions) to how Jameis Winston did against the Cincinnati Bengals a few weeks back. Since then, Winston watched from the bench for a couple of weeks and seemed to have learned and Koetter just wants to see him progress forward. “I’m sure we’ll turn it over again at some point. I’m sure we haven’t seen the last of turnovers. You see what happened to Carolina yesterday. Cam Newton had been playing right at probably his MVP level from a couple years ago when he had four turnovers yesterday – could’ve had six. We had our hands on other balls. It’s fickle that way. I think as long as Jameis continues to make good decisions then he’s going to play good football. That’s really all we’re worried about, Dirk Koetter said.” Koetter was certainly extremely pleased with Winston on Monday afternoon and rightfully so. If Winston continues to play the way he is and the Buccaneers win some more football games, Koetter might just buy himself one more year in Tampa Bay.Tempering expectations for Vita Vea The Buccaneers have been without 2018 first round pick Vita Vea for the entire preseason. He went down with a calf injury early in training camp and has been out ever since. He appears to be on his way back, but once he does return, what can the team really expect from him? It’s obviously never ideal for a rookie to miss his first training camp. There are so many valuable reps to be had throughout the month of August, especially for a rookie that still has some developing to do. NFL.com’s draft profile noted that Vea “lacks feel for double teams and blocking schemes” and is “too quick to default to brute force over technique.” Those are the types of things that coaches and veteran teammates could have worked on with Vea during training camp. There isn’t much time in game week practices that will be devoted to development. So what does that mean for the rookie? With that time gone, it’ll be tough for him to burst onto the scene quickly in 2018.Even before the injury, there didn’t seem to be any type of grand expectations for the Washington product. The thought seemed to be that he would rotate in with veterans Beau Allen and Mitch Unrein, easing his way into the NFL game. He was expected to get time on run-stopping downs, while developing and working his way into pass-rushing situations. But now? All of that is still the case, but probably even more so. Vea has to catch up Ali Marpet Jersey , which means the Bucs and their fans will have to be patient. After last Sunday’s practice, head coach Dirk Koetter seemed both frustrated and encouraged with Vea’s situation. In one breath, he said: There’s some frustration there. Not having your No. 12 overall pick at practice for a month isn’t ideal. But even still, Koetter seems to think that Vea, being a defensive tackle, will be in a better position to step in and contribute once he’s healthy:It seems plausible that a defensive tackle will have an easier time picking things up than one of those other positions. Vea will show flashes, likely more in run-stopping situations early on, but patience will be the key. Fans can’t expect a ton from him this year. It’s more than likely going to be frustrating at times, especially when guys like Derwin James and perhaps Minkah Fitzpatrick are having early success. But careers in this league are far more of a marathon than they are a sprint. Vea might not be a world-beater in year one, but all hope isn’t lost because of that. Just try to have patience.

Fluker still battling a hamstring injury, the Seattle Seahawks were low on bodies along the interior of the offensive line. To help that problem, they brought back a familiar name, signing guard/center Marcus Henry to the practice squad. Henry, a UDFA in 2016, signed with the Seahawks in the middle of training camp in 2018 Womens Barkevious Mingo Jersey , and spent the remainder of the preseason with the team.Following Henry’s release during roster cuts, he spent the first month of the season being signed to, and released from, Seattle’s practice squad. Since his release in late September, he’s been out of the NFL. Henry joins Jordan Roos as interior players on the Seahawks’ practice squad. Should Fluker be unable to play in Week 16, presumably one of Henry or Roos would be called up to the 53 in order to backup Ethan Pocic. To make room for Henry on the practice squad, Seattle released Damore’ea Stringfellow. Similar to Henry, Stringfellow was with the Seahawks throughout camp before his release.
Golden Nuggets: My official Beathard fan club card came today No Ronnie Lott Jersey , I don’t think CJ Beathard is going to lead us to the Super Bowl and no, I don’t think he will be our starting quarterback a year from now. I think he has had a year to learn our offense and he will run it the best way he can. I don’t even expect him to win many games but life goes on and he is our quarterback and I will be rooting for him on Sunday. So what do I have to look forward to this year? I expect Matt Breida to become a seasoned running back and I expect George Kittle to continue to improve. I am hoping our wide receivers can learn to run the right routes and I am hoping our offensive line can start to gel. There is a lot of improvement needed by those players and positions if the 49ers want to take their game to the next level when Jerrick McKinnon and Jimmy Garoppolo return. I am not expecting Beathard to become a leading quarterback in the NFL but I am keeping my fingers crossed that he can become a very good backup quarterback for Jimmy G and we can feel lucky to have him as our backup for the foreseeable future. Now onto the hot links:Eric Reid picks Panthers over 49ers’ offerChris Biderman49ers injury report: Matt Breida upgraded to full participant in practiceKyle MadsonRichard Sherman blames time off for recent injuryChris BidermanRichard Sherman backs coaching, blames playersBrad AlmquistKyle Shanahan explains why the 49ers couldn’t land Eric ReidDavid BonillaReport: Seahawks offered Eric Reid a one-year deal in AugustCharean WilliamsAfter a Brutal Sunday, the 49ers are Ready to Put Faith in C.J. Unfortunately, this is going to be one of the shorter editions - I spent all weekend moving to a new house, and missed the game. Not to mention, the internet hasn't quite been set up yet, so I'm trying to do this on my phone (insert nervous emoji here). Although the box score can provide me enough clues to stumble through a review, that seems a little less genuine than I can convincingly feign. What is apparent, despite missing the game, is that the 49ers have been absolutely snakebitten in terms of injury. A week after losing Jimmy Garoppolo for the season, and Richard Sherman for an extended period, the team is now dealing with potentially extended injuries to long-time anchor Joe Staley and rookie 2nd rounder Dante Pettis. Although an ACL injury has been preliminarily ruled out for both, they will undergo MRIs later today, at which point we'll know more about the severity of their injuries. Of course we're all hoping for the best, on both a human and fan level, but knee injuries can be tough to deal with, even if they're not deemed "too serious" - and I wouldn't be surprised if either missed some time. The 49ers are now 1-3, which shouldn't be much of a surprise to anyone, considering that they've been without their top RB the entire season Nick Mullens Jersey , and the franchise quarterback has been lost for the campaign. What is a surprise, however, is that this record ties them with 8 other teams - and behind exactly one. Although the NFC West is home to a team expected to make a deep playoff run in the Los Angeles Rams, the uncomfortable reality is that our actual cheif divisional rival this season is the Arizona Cardinals - who sit ignominiously atop the NFL (in terms of draft positioning) at 0-4, all by their own selves, and enjoying the NFCW basement all to their own selves.49ers sustained several injuries against Chargers || Biderman, Sac Bee | Maiocco, NBC Sports Bay AreaGame 4 review || Biderman, Sac Bee | Madson, Ninerswire | Almquist, KNBRGame 4 analysis || Biderman, Sac Bee | Maiocco, NBC Sports Bay Area | Maiocco (2), NBC Sports Bay Area | Madson, Ninerswire | Lowder, NinerswireTeammates impressed with CJ Beathard's grit || Maiocco, NBC Sports Bay Area | Almquist, KNBR49ers upset with a hard-fought loss || Maiocco, NBC Sports Bay Area49ers reportedly inquired about LeVeon Bell || KNBR Staff

Those are issues.Let’s hope all players are healthy for Sunday. The best thing about gambling is that you can gamble on pretty much anything. Case in point: Odds have been crafted for receiver Antonio Brown‘s team upon the passing of the trade deadline.Via Bookmaker.eu, the Steelers remain the overwhelming favorite, at -2000. But if Brown were to be traded, the top two destinations are the Browns and Cardinals Youth Christian Kirk Jersey , at +1000 each.Others are the Eagles and Titans (+1600 each), the Colts and Raiders (+2000 each), the 49ers (+2800). The field rates a +1200.The biggest impediment to trading Brown would be the cap consequences. While a trade wouldn’t change the $7.955 million allocation that applies in 2018 for his signing bonus, a trade would trigger a 2019 cap charge of $21.12 million. Also Christian Kirk Men Jersey , Brown’s agent has denied that Brown wants to be traded. While that doesn’t stop the Steelers from deciding they’ve had enough, there’s currently no reason to think that the Steelers would take the cap charge in exchange for the ability to flip a potentially disgruntled player for picks.
The Falcons could complete their offensive line makeover Adult Julio Jones Jersey , but it’s not without its potential costs."If the Falcons elect to hold off on addressing some of their most pressing defensive needs just a little bit longer with the selection of a tackle in the first round, it would have a ramifications all over the roster for 2019 and beyond. Today, we’ll take a look at that potential utcome. Who might the Falcons take? The most common names being bandied about are Jawaan Taylor, Jonah Williams, and Cody Ford, but suffice to say one of the top five or so tackles is likely to be available at #14, if not 3-4 of them. What does it mean for the roster in 2019?A first round right tackle would immediately lock into battle with Ty Sambrailo for the starting right tackle job and would be the heavy favorite to win it. Sambrailo has been talked up by the Falcons after putting together a stretch of solid-to-above average play at the end of 2018 and is under contract for the next three years, making him a perfectly legitimate stopgap in the team’s eyes. He’s unlikely to be able to fend off a top 15 tackle, even so.That would mean the Falcons would be reliant on a rookie Limited Calvin Ridley Jersey , however talented, on an offensive line that could legitimately turn over three starters despite my suggestions that it would be difficult to do so earlier in the spring. Sambrailo would be available as a solid enough swing tackle, Matt Gono would be lurking on the roster or practice squad as a developmental option, and the Falcons would essentially have finalized their 2019 offense, barring injuries. Depending on how quickly the rookie hits the ground running and how James Carpenter and Jamon Brown, the offense certainly would have the talent to be a juggernaut again. What does it mean long-term?This is where drafting a tackle is really appealing. If the Falcons do land a good-to-great starting right tackle in the first round, that player should be relatively affordable through 2022 and will come with a fifth-year option, giving the Falcons their bookend tackles for several seasons while they search for long-term answers on the interior of the line. That will be essential for keeping Matt Ryan upright and healthy through what figures to be the final few seasons of his career (he’ll be 34 in May, so we’re talking anywhere from 3-7 years Calvin Ridley Falcons Jersey , hopefully the latter) as the roster changes around him, given that the team has to come to grips with the end of Alex Mack’s contract, financial decisions at receiver with Mohamed Sanu and a 2022 new contract for Calvin Ridley, and likely some churn at running back. The stability afforded by having that kind of talent at arguably the two most critical spots on the offensive line is genuinely important, and has to be tempting for Atlanta. What are the opportunity costs? Myriad, potentially. needs young, capable defenders even so, and grabbing their long-term tackle makes that a bit more complicated. Should the Falcons do it? It’s not my preference. The Falcons clearly struck gold by getting Ryan Schraeder, an undrafted free agent Elite Calvin Ridley Jersey , to Atlanta and playing at a high level for several seasons, but truth be told they’ve been faring well with undrafted and late round tackle options at that position for years now. A marquee, first round tackle very well might take over for Sambrailo this year and prove to be an upgrade both now and in the future, but this is a class with some interesting later round options and passing on a top-shelf defensive lineman may come with its own heavy costs. The Falcons need to protect Matt Ryan, especially as he gets older, but they can do that through a mix of savvy later picks and stopgaps at right tackle and legitimate long-term upgrades at guard, to say nothing of ensuring they have a quality heir for Alex Mack. It doesn’t pop and fizzle and it’s not the slam dunk a first round tackle would seem to be, but at some point the Falcons are going to need to put a strong defense on the field alongside their consistently terrific offense, and this year is a prime opportunity to get the kind of player who can get them well on the way there. Falcons owner Arthur Blank’s team didn’t make the playoffs this season Game Calvin Ridley Jersey , but with the Super Bowl in Atlanta, Blank is involved in hosting activities, and he believes NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell will finally break his silence about the issue at his annual pre-Super Bowl press conference.Blank said he thinks Goodell will have something to say about the missed call that should have given the Saints a first down late in the NFC Championship Game when he gives his “State of the League” address on Wednesday.鈥淚 understand the way Saints fans feel and their organization feels and their city feels,鈥?Blank said, via the . 鈥淭hey should express themselves in any way they can, and I鈥檓 sure the Commissioner will respond on Wednesday. But, I would understand their views certainly.鈥滸oodell has taken a lot of criticism for his failure to say anything about the missed call. It’s unlikely that he can say anything on Wednesday to stem that criticism, but an acknowledgement that a bad call was made is something that the commissioner ought to do.
KANSAS CITY Elite Mark Andrews Jersey , Mo. (AP) — Andy Reid has always been considered an offensive-minded head coach, whether it's because he played along the offensive line in college or tutored the likes of Brett Favre once he reached the NFL.So his response wasn't all that surprising this week when the Chiefs coach was asked who generally comes out on top when an potent offense goes up against a shutdown defense."This thing is based on a point system," Reid said with a wry grin. "Pretty simple there." Well, points might be at a premium even for the Chiefs' potent attack Sunday, because Reid and Co. are getting precisely what he was asked about: The Baltimore Ravens are rolling into Arrowhead Stadium boasting the league's top-ranked defense for an intriguing matchup between playoff contenders. The AFC West-leading Chiefs (10-2) are tops in the NFL in scoring at 37 points per game. They also lead in yards per play, are third in yards passing and in the top five in most other categories. The Ravens (7-5), who are a game back of Pittsburgh in the loss column in the AFC North, allow a league-best 17.8 points per game. They're also No. 1 in total yards, second in yards passing and third in yards rushing, while their 35 sacks also rank among the best in the NFL."We're going to face Game Mark Andrews Jersey , arguably, the best offense in the league on Sunday. We just have to go to work," Ravens coach John Harbaugh said. "I know that's what you always hear, but that's really got to be the focus. Just keep it about that."As for the Chiefs, their focus can return to what happens on the field. They were preparing for last week's trip to Oakland when video surfaced that showed star running back Kareem Hunt assaulting a woman in a hotel hallway in February. By the time they took the field 48 hours later, Hunt had been released and Spencer Ware had taken over as the starter in a 40-33 victory. Now, the veteran running back will have a week's worth of work as their No. 1 running back behind him, and just in time to face the Ravens and their rugged defensive front."They've got a lot of size up front, and on their defense overall, but it's the same mentality Mark Andrews Womens Jersey ," Ware said. "We're going to try to get in there and control the football."The Ravens have likewise become a ground-oriented attack with elusive Lamar Jackson under center, and with the emergence of Gus Edwards at running back. They've had at least 200 yards rushing in each of their past three wins, becoming the first team since the 2010 Jaguars to accomplish that feat."I just play ball. I don't think about all that when I'm out there," Jackson said. "It's just moving the ball, get positive possessions, don't get negative plays and stuff like that. I just want to move the ball downfield, hopefully get in the red zone and score points."As the Ravens prepare to visit Kansas City on Sunday, here are some other things to know:TEACHER VS STUDENTHarbaugh was hired in 2008 by Ray Rhodes and retained when Reid took over as Philadelphia's coach in 2009, working first with special teams and then with the secondary.Harbaugh and Reid went to a Super Bowl together with the Eagles in 2004, before Harbaugh left for Baltimore in 2008."Who you start with really makes a big difference Youth Mark Andrews Jersey ," said Harbaugh, who won the Super Bowl with the Ravens in 2012. "If you start with people that do it the right way it just gives you a chance, gives you a leg up. And Andy, for me, was a big part of that in every way."PLENTY OF OPTIONSWhen Jackson runs the run-pass option, he's got plenty of backs from which to choose. Edwards has been receiving the majority of carries lately, though his string of 100-yard games ended in Atlanta in part because Kenneth Dixon and Ty Montgomery combined for 11 attempts. Dixon ran for 37 yards, but he also had one of the Ravens' four fumbles in the game."The good thing is," Harbaugh said, "he recovered it right away."BELIEF IN BERRYChiefs safety Eric Berry could make his season debut after hurting his heel early in training camp. He never landed on injured reserve Mark Andrews Men Jersey , but the Chiefs held their star playmaker out of action until coming back from their bye last week. He didn't play in Oakland, but he now has two weeks of practice under him and Reid said it is possible that he is active on Sunday.WEST'S RETURNThe Chiefs signed former running back Charcandrick West to provide depth after Hunt's release, and don't be surprised if he is active on Sunday. West is familiar with the offense, and he is excellent as both a pass-catcher and blocker in the passing game, making him useful against the Baltimore defense."Home is always the best-case scenario," West said of his return. "This is my family."FORECAST FOR FOOTBALLFreezing temperatures are expected Sunday, and some wonder how Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes will respond to them. He played collegiately at Texas Tech, and the bye coupled with a trip to Oakland the past few weeks means his experience in frigid weather is limited."I don't think it changes at all. Coach Reid has us outside every single day," he said. "But it will be awesome to be back at Arrowhead. Hopefully we can stay here more than these last three (regular-season) games. Hopefully we can use home-field advantage to our advantage." The Ravens haven’t typically kept three quarterbacks on their 53-man roster, but they kept Robert Griffin III last year for a few reasons. But they apparently had a few chances to move him.Griffin said on a podcast on the Ravens’ official website that the Jaguars tried to trade for him twice last season.“Jacksonville tried to trade for me at the end of the preseason and right before the trade deadline Color Rush Mark Andrews Jersey , so we knew that was an opportunity and there’d be a chance if things didn’t work out with Nick Foles,” Griffin said, via CBSSports.com.It’s interesting in looking back at the Jaguars decision-making at the position to consider the possibility. High on their trip to the AFC Championship Game, they extended quarterback Blake Bortles in February. If they were trying to trade for Griffin in August, it might have simply been to have a better grade of backup. A later pursuit would have had a different message, considering Bortles was benched in December before getting the starting job back for the regular season finale. Of course, they cut him this offseason to sign Foles.Griffin stayed put, and re-signed with the Ravens this offseason to stay as the mentor/backup to Lamar Jackson. But it’s interesting to consider what might have been for his free agency, if he’d have had a chance to play for a different team last season.
The Carolina Panthers will have just two defensive ends on the active roster when the league year begins in March—Mario Addison and Marquis Haynes—so it’s no secret that they must find players to fill out the depth chart before training camp begins this summer. As we’ve discussed several times already Blue Greg Olsen Jersey , there are two ways to accomplish this: Free agency and the NFL Draft.Just like last week, Dan Kadar from Mocking the Draft has given the Panthers a pass rusher in his latest mock draft. Last week he mocked former Florida Gators defensive end Jachai Polite to the Panthers, but this week it’s former Michigan Wolverine Rashan Gary who ends up in Carolina. My main concern with this pick for the Panthers is that I’m not sure that Gary will fall all the way to No. 16. I think he will be a good player in the NFL, and I think he’s definitely worth a first rounder, but I’m not sure he lasts until it’s Carolina’s turn to pick. WalterFootball lists Gary as the No. 2 defensive end in this year’s class after Nick Bosa, and believes that he could play defensive end in either a 4-3 or a 3-4 defense. If WalterFootball’s analysis is correct, Gary’s versatility could make him an attractive option for the Panthers. But at the same time, if Gary is that versatile how would he fall all the way down to No. 16 overall? If he truly is the second best defensive end in this year’s draft class (a notion that I disagree with, mind you) I don’t see many scenarios where he is even available for the Panthers to draft without trading up to get him. At that point, I’d rather just pick the best player on the board at No. 16. I don’t think the Panthers can afford to trade away draft picks to move up in this year’s draft—there are simply too many holes in the roster to do that. What do you think, Panthers fans? Would you be okay with drafting Gary in the first round? Let’s hear what you have to say! As the NFL free agency period starts, a crowded safety group means there will be a lot of possible solutions to the Carolina Panthers’ questions."WhiteFanposts Fanshots Sections Keep Sounding PodcastPanthers 2019 NFL DraftCSR Film RoomCarolina Panthers free agency 2019The free agent market is loaded at safety this offseasonNew Kawann Short Jersey 2019 ,106commentsAs the NFL free agency period starts, a crowded safety group means there will be a lot of possible solutions to the Carolina Panthers’ questions.ESTShareTweetShareShareThe free agent market is loaded at safety this offseasonKirby Lee-USA TODAY SportsThe Panthers re-signed Eric Reid in the offseason to a contract averaging $7 million per year, addressing their strong safety need before free agency and the draft. However, with Mike Adams and Colin Jones departing, only Rashaan Gaulden and Da’Norris Searcy remain to start opposite him. It is somewhat likely that the team feels these guys could be feasible in 2019, however the 2018 season showed that Carolina’s approach to the safety position doesn’t work so well without elite front seven play. Addressing that and completely turning it around could be a major challenge to do in one offseason, so addressing the free safety position would make a lot of sense. Let’s break down the free agency class to see what’s realistic, and what isn’t.The pipe dreamsEarl Thomas: Despite coming off a season ending injury in 2018, Earl Thomas is still widely considered one of the best free safeties in the NFL. He’s a game changer, and on the open market he should warrant a mostly guaranteed one-two year deal that will still pay him up in the top as far as annual salary goes. The Panthers can’t afford this unless Marty Hurney can get really creative.Landon Collins: Collins is coming off a year where he was at worst in the conversation for defensive player of the year. Collins is going to reset the safety market, and Carolina doesn’t have the money.Lamarcus Joyner: After coming off the franchise tag as a versatile defensive back for the Super Bowl runner-up Los Angeles Rams, Joyner is looking to get paid this offseason. A player like him who can play both safety positions and have value in the slot is going to get paid on the open market by a team with bonkers cap space. The short term guysEric Weddle: Weddle was cut by the Baltimore Ravens following a good 2018 season. Weddle is 34 Blue Kawann Short Jersey , and likely looking for his last NFL contract. Due to his familiarity with Ron Rivera, he could be an excellent fit in Carolina’s supposedly multi-front system in 2019. The issue would be how much he thinks he’s worth after being cut from a $7.5 million deal in the 2018 season.Glover Quin: At 33, Quin hits the market as another veteran likely on his last contract in the NFL. Quin has experience as a free safety, therefore a team like Carolina should be interested in him. The wear and tear certainly is there, but the Panthers have made it work in the past with primarily strong safety type players at both positions. With a sub $5 million cap hit in 2018, his services could be had for around the same price... hopefully?George Iloka: Iloka is coming off an $880k contract with the Vikings, however he barely played in 2018. He likely enters free agency looking for a prove it deal to show he’s still got some mileage left. He’s more of a question mark than most who would be looking for a short term deal, but Carolina may be willing to pull the trigger to let him fight it out with Da’Norris Searcy and Rashaan Gaulden for playing time.Tre Boston: Boston again took a one year prove it deal in 2018 with the Cardinals, and didn’t really prove he deserves upper tier safety money. With a crowded safety market, he could be looking for another prove it deal with potentially more incentives. Could a return to Charlotte be in the cards? The surprisesAs much as I’ve personally advocated for Carolina to address the safety position, I’m not sure if they will sink significant capital into the opposite starter with some of the other names on the market. Adrian Amos, Ha-Ha Clinton-Dix Color Rush Christian Miller Jersey , Tyrann Matthieu, and Adrian Phillips likely will receive higher offers that will look inflated compared to average safety contracts out there. That is the nature of free agency. However, there’s a chance Carolina structures a contract in the way they did for Bashaud Breeland in 2018 (before he failed his physical) which gives them significant cap flexibility over the span of the deal. I wouldn’t bet money on it myself, but addressing the safety position long term at least gives them the ability to really go after the front seven in the draft. My pickI think the Panthers will sign Eric Weddle. Ron Rivera knows how to use him, and as I’ve said he has experience in 3-4 and 4-3 defenses. Weddle can play both safety positions, and would be a fine addition opposite Eric Reid. The Panthers don’t really use a traditional strong and free safety, as their assignments generally change throughout the game. However, with Weddle’s flexibility and experience he could be an excellent short term answer while the Panthers sift through the draft for a better one in the long term.Weddle showed he is still one of the better safeties in the NFL, and it would give Carolina time to develop Gaulden if they truly believe he is going to be a safety. The signing makes sense, though they’d have to make some cap moves to make it happen.stares at Torrey SmithWho would you like to see the Panthers sign, Panthers fans?

After reportedly agreeing to terms to land free agent linebacker Anthony Barr on Monday, the Vikings defender changed his mind overnight, ultimately choosing to re-sign with Minnesota. Here’s the intriguing part: It was almost the Detroit Lions instead of the Jets.According to The Athletic, the Lions were very big players in the Anthony Barr market, and Barr was high on them too. “The Athletic reported New York’s initial interest in Barr over the weekend. The issue? At the time, it was No. 2 http://www.lionslockerroom.com/authentic-theo-riddick-jersey , not 1, on his list. According to league sources, the top spot belonged to the Lions,” wrote Connor Hughes of The Athletic. While Barr may have preferred the Lions, Detroit had a bigger fish they were looking to catch: Patriots defender Trey Flowers. Understandably, Matt Patricia was fully recruiting Flowers, a player he coached for several years in New England. But Detroit was in a bidding war with former Patriots coach Brian Flores and the Miami Dolphins, who were viewed as the favorites to sign the former Patriot. In the end, Patricia won over Flowers, which allowed the Jets to agree to terms with Barr. Luckily for the Jets Dwayne Washington Jersey White , they were also negotiating with C.J. Mosley, so when the Barr deal fell through, they had their contingency plan in place. As for the Dolphins, they’re still looking to upgrade their edge position after losing Cameron Wake to the Tennessee Titans in free agency. Here’s a look at where all three players involved in this triangle landed:Trey Flowers to Lions - 5 years, $90 million ($56 million guaranteed)Anthony Barr to Vikings - 5 years, $67.5 million ($33 million guaranteed)C.J. Mosley to Jets - 5 years, $85 million ($51 million guaranteed) The Lions could have had Anthony Barr for much, much cheaper than Flowers, but, of course Sam Martin Jersey , there’s no guarantee that Barr would’ve kept his commitment to the Lions, either. As for Mosley, it looks like the Lions got better player for only slightly more. Overall, I’d say things worked out pretty well for Detroit, even if they had to break the bank to get the player they wanted. As they travel to Minnesota for their second divisional game, the Detroit Lions made a couple of noteworthy transactions and designations. First, the Lions activated Andy Jones from off the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list. Jones returned to practice a couple of weeks ago after missing all of training camp and the first eight weeks of the season with an undisclosed injury. He is now eligible to play this Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings, but there’s a good chance he’ll be a gameday inactive, even though Detroit obviously has a Golden Tate-shaped hole on their roster. To make room for Jones, the Lions waived cornerback Cre’von LeBlanc. That could open up a possibility of Lenzy Pipkins getting some playing time this week. Additionally Womens Jake Rudock Jersey , the Lions downgraded linebacker Jalen Reeves-Maybin to OUT for Sunday’s game. When that happens on the Saturday of a road game, it typically means the player didn’t travel with the team. That could be good news for Ezekiel Ansah, who was not downgraded from questionable. The Lions’ premier pass rusher has not played since Week 1 because of a shoulder injury. The Vikings also made a curious move this weekend. They promoted WR Chad Beebe to the active roster. This may suggest that WR Stefon Diggs—who has been fighting off a rib injury—may not be able to go against the Lions. Check back with Pride of Detroit 90 minutes before kickoff and we’ll have all of the Week 9 inactives. There are some key players dealing with injuries—Darius Slay, Ezekiel Ansah, Xavier Rhodes, Riley Reiff, just to name a few.
The Buccaneers and Falcons released their initial injury report for the week six match-up and it could provide some optimism for Bucs fans. With a depleted secondary Jameis Winston Jersey White , seeing Jordan Whitehead listed as a full participant is a slight sigh of relief. Not only that, but Beau Allen - who missed the last two games - was back at practice in a limited capacity. Should he play, that would give the Bucs Allen and Vea together for the first time this season as part of the defensive line rotation.O.J. Howard who left the Bears game with a MCL sprain was also back at practice, well ahead of the projected 2-4 week timetable for his injury. On the Falcons’ side, running back Devonta Freeman missed practice with a foot injury and is in serious doubt for Sunday’s game. That would mean the load would fall on Tevin Coleman, as it has for most of the season for Atlanta.Things are looking up for the Bucs on the injury front, but we’re still four days away from the game and a lot can change between now and then. Tampa Bay signed the 2015 first-rounder to a one-year deal earlier this week."WhiteFanposts Fanshots Sections 2016 NFL DraftInjuriesFree AgencyGame FilmA deeper look at new Buccaneers WR Breshad PerrimanNew,11commentsTampa Bay signed the 2015 first-rounder to a one-year deal earlier this week.EDTShareTweetShareShareA deeper look at new Buccaneers WR Breshad PerrimanDennis Wierzbicki-USA TODAY SportsAfter agreeing to trade disgruntled veteran wide receiver DeSean Jackson to the Philadelphia Eagles earlier this week, the Buccaneers suddenly had a dire need for a new speed option at receiver. They decided to fill that need with former first-round pick Breshad Perriman, who signed a one-year, $4 million deal with the team. Perriman, the No. 26 overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, was originally set to return to the Browns for 2019. However, the blockbuster trade that sent Odell Beckham Jr. to Cleveland had Perriman wanting out of his one-year agreement. Suddenly, he was available for Tampa Bay to snatch up. Since I’m Bucs Nation’s resident “UCF guy,” I’m here to provide a deeper look at the career of the UCF product and a projection of what he will bring to Bruce Arians’ offense in 2019.UCF (2012-2014)After playing his high school ball in Georgia, Perriman headed down to Orlando as a two-star recruit. In 2012, his first year with UCF, he caught 26 passes for 388 yards and three touchdowns, averaging 14.9 yards per catch. He further burst onto the scene in 2013, helping put the program on the map during its historic Fiesta Bowl season. The Knights finished that year 12-1, capping it with an upset victory over No. 6 Baylor for what was the school’s biggest bowl win ever (at the time). Perriman caught 39 passes for 811 yards and four touchdowns that season. He posted 20.8 yards per catch, showing off his big-play ability starting as early as the team’s season opener:The Knights repeated as conference champions in 2014, with Perriman being a major reason why. Trailing by four with seconds to go, UCF had one final shot. The team’s standout junior wide receiver found a way to get behind the defense to haul in a game-winning 51-yard touchdown catch that is affectionately remembered as the “Hail Perriman.”He finished that game with 139 yards on four catches (38.4 yards per catch), and went on to cap his college career with a nine-catch, 138-yard performance in the Knights’ bowl loss to North Carolina State. The conference title-clinching catch against East Carolina was Perriman’s most iconic moment at UCF, but his three-year career was more than just that one play. With 50 catches for 1,044 yards and nine scores as a junior, he finished his Knights career with 115 catches for 2,243 yards and 16 touchdowns. In those three seasons, he averaged 19.5 yards per catch.NFL Draft PrepA hamstring injury kept Perriman out of the NFL Scouting Combine, but he was able to raise his stock at UCF’s Pro Day. He put up two sub-4.3 40-yard dash times, which helped propel him into a first-round prospect.Baltimore Ravens (2015-2017)Perriman was selected by the Ravens with the No. 26 pick in the first round of the 2015 draft. An injury kept him out for all of the 2015 season. He finally made his NFL debut in 2016, playing 16 games and catching 33 of his 66 targets for 499 yards and three touchdowns. He averaged 15.1 yards per catch, with his longest catch of the season going for 53 yards against the Dolphins on Dec. 4. His production wasn’t exactly up to par for a first-round pick Womens Chris Conte Jersey , but he still flashed a ton of potential, as seen in the video below:The 2017 season was a little tougher for Perriman, as he played just 11 games and caught 10 of his 34 targets for 77 yards. His yards per catch average dipped to 7.7, and his longest catch of the year was just 14 yards. In May of 2018, Baltimore declined his fifth-year option. When roster cuts came around in September, he didn’t make the team. In two seasons with the Ravens, he played 27 games and caught 43 of his 101 targets for 576 yards and three touchdowns. He averaged 13.4 yards per catch. Overall, his time with Baltimore was a huge letdown, especially for a first-rounder. He has been looked at as one of the franchise’s biggest busts ever. Injuries were a big reason why. He had a partially torn PCL that caused him to miss his whole rookie year, a partially torn ACL that cost him some time in 2016 and a hamstring issue that slowed him at points in 2017. Not only did he deal with injuries constantly, but he also failed to put up consistent production and struggled with dropped passes. Cleveland Browns (2018)Despite the injury history and drop issues, Perriman found a new home in 2018. His size, speed and sheer ability clearly never left, so it was only a matter of time before he ended up somewhere. He signed with Washington and was waived five days later, but then signed with the Browns in October. With Cleveland, he played in 10 games (two starts). He caught 16 of his 25 targets for 340 yards and two touchdowns. He put up a whopping 21.3 yards per catch, with a season long of 66 yards.Despite the limited targets, Perriman proved that he could still produce at a high level in the NFL. His catch rate was much better, and he was able to stay healthy. He provided rookie quarterback Baker Mayfield with a solid deep threat, but was also more than just a guy who ran fly routes. Considering he was about to sign on for another year with the Browns, it’s clear that his impact in 2018 was enough for the new staff to want him back as a piece of that young offense going forward. What Perriman Can Bring The Bucs In 2019 For Breshad Perriman in 2019, expectations are surely going to vary. Plenty will say he was and still is a bust, but I’m willing to think that he has a lot to offer the Bucs. He proved last year that when he can stay healthy, he is still a threat. He turns just 26 years old in September, so there’s no reason he shouldn’t be able to produce on a Tampa Bay offense that features established pass-catching options like Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, O.J. Howard and Cameron Brate. His improved catch rate in 2018 was a step forward, even if it’s not a perfect indicator of his overall performance. But despite his rocky past in the NFL, he is more than capable of fulfilling what the Bucs need him to be — likely a No. 3 receiving option/speed threat. As a replacement for DeSean Jackson, Perriman will be expected to be that go-to guy when the Bucs are looking for the long ball. He can still take the top off the defense, and if Jameis Winston can develop a stronger connection with him than the one he had with Jackson, Tampa Bay may have a huge free agency steal. One positive is that Perriman will likely be used by this new coaching staff in a number of ways — not just for the deep ball. One of the biggest criticisms of Jackson’s time in Tampa was that former head coach Dirk Koetter was locked in on him being a deep ball guy and nothing else. With Bruce Arians, there’s a higher likelihood of innovation with Perriman’s role. There really shouldn’t be too much pressure on Perriman, especially with the rest of the weapons the offense possesses. That should help him ease in and develop a strong rapport with Winston. If he stays healthy, he could be a big boost for the Buccaneer offense in year one under Arians.

Oh man. PDTShareTweetShareShareRaheem Mostert can benefit from Mitch WishnowskySome people like the fact the San Francisco 49ers took a punter in the fourth round of the 2019 NFL Draft. Some people hate the fact the 49ers took a punter. Regardless of opinion, the 49ers snagged a shiny new punter to replace Bradley Pinion. With that said, we’ll give another reason to have a bit less hesitance towards WishnowskiThe thing about Wishnowsky is consistency.Of his 59 punts in 2018, he forced 24 kicks inside the 20-yard line and 25 fair catches. Yes there’s three blocks in there, but he’s either getting it to the 20-yard line where someone can take down the returner or he’s putting enough hangtime on it so the returner has to flag a fair catch. Enter: Raheem Mostert. Mostert has been kept on the 49ers roster not for his running back skills (that did, however, come in handy for 2018) but for his usage as a special teams gunner. When Mostert went down with the broken forearm in 2018, his absence was felt by the very next game. When he can bullet down the field and take out the poor punt returner is where Mostert’s main skills lie. Ahem, allow me: Combine Wishnowsky’s tendency to pin teams past the 20 or at least have the hangtime to keep them from going anywhere, with a special teams gunner like Mostert who is going to blast anyone who thinks of trying to run with it, and the pass rushing skills of Nick Bosa and company, equals a potential recipe for turnovers. If Wishnowsky can get in position to keep opposing offenses at the 10-yard line Adrian Colbert Jersey , this could be something to watch. An NFL playbook gets limited beyond an offense’s own 10-yard line and if the defensive line can shake things up like we all hope it can, the 49ers can get some pretty nice opportunities. Or it could just not get any turnovers like in 2018...but let’s cross our fingers for this punter. The Atlanta Falcons made one of the first big moves of the offseason following Super Bowl 53 when they released cornerback Robert Alford. The Falcons made the move because Alford had his worst season as a pro, turned 30 this past season, and was going to have a cap hit of $9.1 million this season. The Falcons cleared $7.9 million with the release, so it was not a surprising move.Alford is officially free and clear to sign with anybody that is interested. Players on an expiring contract do not get to negotiate with new teams until March, but because he was released now, Alford can begin negotiating with all 32 teams. The San Francisco 49ers have some questions at cornerback, and as soon as Alford was released, people started asking if the team should look into him. He had a miserable 2018 season, with opposing quarterbacks connecting with receivers for 849 yards and a passer rating of 138.9. If you think he hit the post-30 wall, so be it. But if you think he can rebound, he’s on the radar. The question is how the 49ers should approach the continued building of their cornerback depth chart. You can never have enough cornerbacks in a growing passing league, so I fully expect the team to add at least one cornerback this offseason. Competition is critical, but how would you look to approach it between the draft and free agency?

Ron:Kenneth:Matt Weston:Mike Bullock:There’s a lot of solid logic behind each of these picks, but even if everything makes perfect sense, free agency is often a crapshoot.Look no further than Houston’s signing of Aaron Colvin last year - a player I was hoping the Texans would target.Colvin seemed to be a good fit for the Texans and he was.................not.(Here’s to hoping a lot of this was due to injury and he finds his way in year two.)Who are your top two free agent targets for the Texans? Please use the comments to critique our picks and provide your own as we prepare our minds and bodies for free agency! For the first time in a decade, the top seed in the AFC playoffs goes to a team not led by Tom Brady or Peyton Manning. The Kansas City Chiefs earned the No. 1 seed for the first time since 1997 after switching from Alex Smith to Patrick Mahomes , the sensational second-year star who reminds so many of Brett Favre. The New England Patriots lost five times on the road but still managed to win their customary first-round bye, slipping past the Houston Texans to earn a week off to rest for the 10th consecutive year. They’re the only teams back in the AFC playoffs following a year of comebacks. The Texans return from a year’s absence thanks to the remarkable rebounds of J.J. Watt and Deshaun Watson . The Chargers rode a refined Philip Rivers to their first playoff berth in five years, and the Colts crashed the playoff party for the first time since 2014 behind Andrew Luck’s rousing return .The Colts visit the Texans on Saturday in the wild-card round, and on Sunday the Chargers play at Baltimore, where the Ravens ended a four-year drought by rallying behind Lamar Jackson Justin Reid Jersey , the last of the “Big Five” rookie QBs drafted in the first round, but the first to make it to the playoffs.Strength and weakness of each of the six AFC playoff teams:1. KANSAS CITY CHIEFS (12-4). AP Pro32 Ranking: No. 4. Last Lombardi: Super Bowl 4, 23-7 over Minnesota on Jan. 11, 1970.SHOOTOUT: The Chiefs haven’t had a true franchise QB since Len Dawson led them to their only Super Bowl title. But after letting him learn the ropes under Alex Smith, Mahomes broke out with one of the best seasons in NFL history for a first-year starter (5,097 yards and 50 touchdowns ). K.C. scored at least 26 points in every game, the only team ever to do so.STRIKEOUT: The defense is a dud. Their four losses this season came when they put forth as much resistance as tissue paper: shootout losses to the Rams, Patriots and Seahawks and a fourth-quarter meltdown against the Chargers. Of course, those are all playoff-bound teams. Don’t forget on offense the ouster of RB Kareem Hunt , who had 14 TDs. The Chiefs have gone 3-2 since cutting last year’s rushing champ.SHOUTOUT: “I always feel like there is a bull’s-eye every week, and that’s OK. That’s the way you want it. We’ve earned the right to be in this position.” — Coach Andy Reid.2. NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS (12-4). AP Pro32 Ranking: No. 5 (tie). Last Lombardi: Super Bowl 51 Martinas Rankin Jersey , 34-28, OT, over Atlanta on Feb. 5, 2017.FAR OUT: At 41, he finally showed signs of age this season. But having Tom Brady on their roster makes the Patriots a title contender. Coming off an MVP season, Brady fell off — by his lofty standards — with 4,355 yards, 29 TDs and 11 interceptions. Getting a week off to rest is important because the Patriots have not been a wild-card team since 2009, when they were blown out by Baltimore.FLAME OUT: Every time Brady has won a Super Bowl ring, he had a star-studded defense helping him. The Patriots have given up 30 or more points five times this season, going 2-3. They haven’t been able to get to the quarterback like last year Jordan Akins Jersey , when they were tied for seventh in the league with 42 sacks. This season, they tied for 30th with just 30 sacks.SHOUTOUT: “11-5 is nothing to be sad about. I mean, we fought pretty hard and put ourselves in a decent position here, and now we’ve got to go try to take advantage of it.” — Brady.3. HOUSTON TEXANS (11-5). AP Pro32 Ranking: No. 7. No Lombardis.ROUT: QB Deshaun Watson is healthy again as evidenced by his eight TD throws and no interceptions in the last six games while running for 276 yards and four TDs. DeAndre Hopkins was second in the NFL with a career-high 1,572 yards receiving. J.J. Watt and Jadeveon Clowney combined for 25 sacks and 34 tackles for loss. Watt also forced seven fumbles after playing just eight games over two injury-shortened seasons.POUT: The Texans enter the playoffs thin at receiver behind Hopkins after losing Will Fuller (knee) midseason and Demaryius Thomas , a trade deadline pickup from Denver, to a torn Achilles tendon last month. There is also concern about the porous O-line after Watson was sacked an NFL-leading 62 times this season. That kind of duress can negate any franchise QB. Adding to the pressure is a less-than-impressive ground game.SHOUTOUT: “This team is one of the few teams to come back from 0-3 and to qualify for the playoffs and win the division. We have a tough football team.” — Coach Bill O’Brien.4. BALTIMORE RAVENS (10-6). AP Pro32 Ranking: No. 9. Last Lombardi: Super Bowl 47, 34-31 over San Francisco on Feb. 1, 2013.BREAKOUT: The Ravens are dangerous if rookie QB Lamar Jackson shows the same poise he displayed in leading Baltimore on a 6-1 streak after taking over from an injured Joe Flacco. With Jackson efficiently operating the run-pass option , Baltimore controlled the clock and the rested defense manhandled opponents. John Harbaugh’s Ravens boast the NFL’s second-ranked rushing attack and No. 1 defense.DROPOUT: Baltimore beat the Chargers in L.A. on Dec. 22, but QB Philip Rivers should be ready for the rematch against a defense that last week was burned by Baker Mayfield for 376 yards and three TDs. Jackson ran for nearly 700 yards Keke Coutee Jersey , but with only one career game of 200 yards passing, there’s still some question whether he can bring Baltimore back from a deficit with his arm.SHOUTOUT: “This is what a real team looks like. They block out all the outside, turn to each other for strength and are there for one another. … This is the best team I’ve been around.” — Harbaugh.5. LOS ANGELES CHARGERS (12-4). AP Pro32 Ranking: No. 5 (tie). No Lombardis. Lost Super Bowl 28 to San Francisco 49-26 in 1995.CLOUT: Philip Rivers had a 105.5 passer rating in 2018, equaling his career best. Melvin Gordon had 1,309 yards from scrimmage and 14 TDs and Austin Ekeler emerged as a change-of-pace back. Keenan Allen led the team in catches again but Mike Williams developed into another big-play receiver. The Chargers also aren’t fazed by hitting the road , where they were 7-1 with wins at Seattle, Pittsburgh and Kansas City.DOUBT: The Chargers head into the playoffs with only one healthy starter at linebacker. Denzel Perryman and Jatavis Brown are out with season-ending injuries and their replacements are undersized, something opponents will certainly scheme to exploit. They’ve been outscored 43-14 in the first quarter of the past six games as Rivers has thrown an interception on the first drive in each of the last three games.SHOUTOUT: “We just had to be in the playoffs. Our goal is to try to make a run and try to get to the Super Bowl.” — CB Casey Hayward Jr.6. INDIANAPOLIS COLTS (10-6). AP Pro32 Ranking: No. 8. Last Lombardi: Super Bowl 41, 29-17 over Chicago on Feb. 4, 2007.BLOWOUT: The Comeback Colts got into the playoffs with a three-pronged combo they’ve rarely had: balanced offense, stout defense and championship-caliber QB. Andrew Luck came back from a partially torn labrum in his throwing shoulder with the best overall season of his career. The revamped O-line allowed a league-low 18 sacks and the Colts have allowed 16.4 points over last eight games.BURNOUT: The Colts will spend the playoffs on the road with a roster that lacks much postseason experience. Only four players from Indy’s last playoff team in 2014 will be active Sunday: Luck Deshaun Watson Jersey , T.Y. Hilton, Anthony Castonzo and Adam Vinatieri. Take out three players who own Super Bowl rings — Vinatieri, Jabaal Sheard and Najee Goode — and the other 46 players on the roster have a total of six playoff wins.SHOUTOUT: “That’s every team’s goal at the beginning of the season, to get into the dance, and we have climbed the mountain far enough to get into the playoffs. But our ultimate goals are still out there.” — Vinatieri.
The Seahawks got the win on Sunday Womens Frank Clark Jersey , but most fans, analysts, or anyone watching with a normal sense of good football vs bad football, feels that Seattle only got worse against the Cardinals. That could come from just a gut feeling you had watching the offense struggle to get the ball more than a few yards downfield at a time, but advanced metrics will back your feelings up on that.Once the kings of DVOA (first overall from 2012-2015), the Seahawks have now fallen below the very middle of the pack. The Seahawks were 14th in DVOA last week after their decent win at home over the Cowboys, but they’ve fallen to 19th as we approach Week 5. That includes a number six ranking on defense, but almost every expects that to tumble with the loss of free safety Earl Thomas for the rest of the season; Seattle is ninth against the pass and surprisingly enough, tenth against the run. However, they’ve faced the fifth-easiest schedule of offense so far, per DVOA.That will change at home on Sunday against the number one ranked offense of the LA Rams. The Rams are first in passing efficiency and fourth in rushing efficiency. They are ninth on defense by DVOA, including seventh against the pass and 23rd against the run; only fueling Brian Schottenheimer’s fire to keep the ball out of Russell Wilson’s throwing hand.Seattle is 24th in passing and 22nd in rushing. My instincts told me that the Seahawks must have some advantages on special teams, and that is actually true: Michael Dickson is first in punting efficiency and by a fairly wide margin. However, Seattle is in the negative on every other phase of special teams except for punt returns, where they are just above average. They (Sebastian Janikowski) are one of the worst field goal kicking teams in the league so far.Overall, the Seahawks are 14th in special teams, but they could be bottom-five without Dickson. The Rams, long hailed for their special teams prowess under John Fassel, are just 17th in that category so far and Johnny Hekker+punt coverage is only just above average. The Arizona Cardinals were rumored to be moving on from Steve Wilks after only one season prior to their game against the Seattle Seahawks anyway, but Seattle’s 27-24 victory over the Cardinals surely didn’t do him any favors during a 3-13 season. Sure enough, the Cards did fire Wilks on Monday Jason Myers Jersey Green , less than 24 hours after the game. Also fired this week have been Marvin Lewis of the Cincinnati Bengals, Adam Gase of the Miami Dolphins, Vance Joseph of the Denver Broncos, Todd Bowles of the New York Jets, and Dirk Koetter of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Green Bay Packers and Cleveland Browns also have vacant head coaching positions based on firings earlier this season. The Packers fired head coach Mike McCarthy following a Week 13 loss to Arizona, which was two weeks after a Thursday night loss to the Seahawks helped solidify that Green Bay was going to miss the postseason barring a miraculous finish. Seattle also shutdown the Minnesota Vikings in Week 14, a win loss for the Vikings that made it clear that the Seahawks would likely be a wild card, and they fired offensive coordinator John DeFilippo the next day. The Vikings missed the playoffs on Sunday after losing to the Chicago Bears. The Carolina Panthers also fired two assistant coaches roughly eight days after a loss to Seattle again sent the teams in opposite directions. As of now, that makes three NFC head coaching jobs available, with the Panthers standing by Ron Rivera, the Vikings by Mike Zimmer, and Washington by Jay Gruden. More jobs could potentially become available, but with this much competition for head coaching candidates already in the mix, it might not be the best timing. How many good head coaching candidates are there out there really? Consider that the Bears are 12-4 in their first season with Matt Nagy, the LA Rams are 24-8 in two seasons under Sean McVay, the LA Chargers are 21-11 in two seasons with Anthony Lynn, and the Indianapolis Colts are 10-6 in the first season with Frank Reich. Change can be good. But hirings like those of Gase and Bowles also drew high praise, while Reich was an afterthought in the carousel last season, so predicting which outcomes will be positive is night impossible.I would doubt that Seahawks defensive coordinator Ken Norton gets much attention if based on the strength of Seattle’s defense this season, unless someone gives him credit for doing so with so many pieces of the puzzle missing. The Rooney Rule does mean that each of these eight teams must interview a minority candidate, but there are also many worthy minority head coaching candidates Dontae Johnson Jersey , which could include interviews with the recently-fired Lewis, Joseph, Bowles, and Hue Jackson, along with former Seahawks defensive coordinator Kris Richard; I would expect Richard to get an interview before Norton.Offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer could also have his phone ringing based on a season that saw Russell Wilson throw a career-high in touchdowns while Seattle led the NFL in rushing. The difference between Schottenheimer and Darrell Bevell, who never got a serious look as a head coach? Probably name. But there also more nuances to human beings than that and it’s possible that Schottenheimer is just a better interview, a more charming person, or more impressive in being able to display knowledge of the league. That’s not to say that he is any of those things, I’m just throwing out random examples of what could help a candidate, but if Schottenheimer gets a head coaching job it would not be all that surprising to me.I have no idea what the relationship was like when it ended, and that the fans might hate it, but perhaps a reunion with the Jets, where Schottenheimer was OC for six years, including two AFC Championship game appearances and a top running game, could make sense. I’d think it would be better to pair Schottenheimer with a young quarterback who is already there, rather than an unexciting veteran (Ryan Tannehill, Andy Dalton), and working with Sam Darnold might be in his and their better interest. Just a thought. Or maybe the Cards would like him to take a closer look at their offense while sharing Pete Carroll’s secrets. They’re on the lookout as well and the competition for coaches should be heavy.

According to Packersnews.com, head coach Matt LaFleur will likely hold an interview with Frank Pollack, who served as the Cincinnati Bengals’ offensive line coach last season.Pollack is searching for a new job following the Bengals’ firing of Marvin Lewis. Interestingly, Bengals players and fans appeared to think very highly of Pollack — starting running back Joe Mixon among them. In a since-deleted tweet, Mixon said the following:Meanwhile, Josh Kirkendall of Cincy Jungle noted that the Bengals’ rushing success skyrocketed in 2018, thanks at least in part to Pollack’s arrival. Cincinnati ran for just 3.6 yards per attempt in 2017, but that number increased to 4.7 this fall.In addition to those numbers, one statistical metric found Pollack to be a top-five offensive line coach in the NFL. Justis Mosqueda looked at the sacks and tackles for loss in the run game allowed by a coach’s lines over his career J'Mon Moore Jersey White , relative to the league average, summing them up. As of the writing of his article in early December, that analysis put Pollack as the league’s fifth-best O-line coach, among those employed in that role at that time. When looking at Pollack’s history prior to going to Cincinnati, it’s clear to see why his numbers are so good and why teams (and players) would view him in high regard. He coached the Dallas Cowboys’ offensive line from 2013 to 2017, serving as assistant OL coach for his first two years before earning a promotion in 2015. While in Dallas, he helped a group of highly-drafted talent achieve their potential by becoming one of the league’s best lines. Pollack’s first stint as the primary offensive line coach came in 2012 with the Oakland Raiders, and before that he worked for the Houston Texans, where he and LaFleur worked together under Gary Kubiak. The Packers are also scheduled to interview 49ers assistant OL coach Adam Stenavich for this position, with additional interviews possible in the coming days. The Packers still hold ten picks in the upcoming draft, however."The full order of selections for the 2019 NFL Draft is officially set. The league sent NFL teams this year’s list of compensatory picks on Friday afternoon Womens Lance Kendricks Jersey , locking in all of the selections in their official and final slots. As expected, however, the Green Bay Packers did not receive any compensatory picks for 2019. The Packers had received at least one comp pick in each of the last nine drafts, with 2009 being the most recent year they did not have any. This is a result of the team’s decisions during the 2018 free agency period, when they signed more qualifying free agents than they lost. Jimmy Graham was the team’s biggest signing, which more than canceled out the loss of safety Morgan Burnett to Pittsburgh. The Packers did acquire a pair of day-three draft picks in trades during the 2018 season, however. They hold Washington’s fourth-round selection as compensation for trading safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, and they picked up the Seahawks’ 6th-round pick in exchange for backup quarterback Brett Hundley. Those picks are in addition to an extra first-round pick that they added from the New Orleans Saints during last year’s draft. Here is the final list of the Packers’ draft picks:Round 1, pick 12 (#12 overall)Round 1, pick 30 (#30 overall) Round 2, pick 12 (#44 overall)Round 3 Womens Jason Spriggs Jersey , pick 11 (#75 overall)Round 4, pick 12 (#104 overall)Round 4, pick 16 (#108 overall) — from WashingtonRound 5, pick 12 (#140 overall)Round 6, pick 12 (#185 overall)Round 6, pick 21 (#194 overall) — from SeattleRound 7, pick 12 (#226 overall)

Several former Badgers are confirmed to be coming to Green Bay."Each year Bryan Bulaga Jersey , every NFL team gets to invite 30 players to their team facilities for workouts, interviews, and medical examinations in advance of the NFL Draft. However, teams are also allowed to bring in an unlimited number of “local prospects,” players who either played college football at nearby universities or who claim their hometowns as being nearby the team facilities. For the Green Bay Packers, the most notable school whose prospects qualify as local players is the one in-state FBS program: the Wisconsin Badgers. This week, several draft-eligible Badgers will be making the short drive to the Northeast to Lambeau Field to meet with the team, reports ESPN’s Rob Demovsky. Demovsky has confirmed the names of three Wisconsin players who will be in attendance in the coming days: fullback Alec Ingold, linebacker Ryan Connelly Kyle Murphy Jersey White , and edge rusher Andrew Van Ginkel. Other Badgers may be attending as well, but have not yet been confirmed. The team also has three offensive linemen likely to be drafted (David Edwards, Michael Dieter, and Beau Benzschawel) and another linebacker (T.J. Edwards), along with a few additional players who could hear their names come off the board in the late rounds (safety D’Cota Dixon and nose tackle Olive Sagapolu).Ingold was a short-yardage and goal-line stud for the Badgers for four years, starting at tailback before moving to fullback and bulking up. In the last few seasons, he developed into an excellent lead-blocker and a good receiver out of the backfield, and he scored a total of 21 touchdowns over his college career.Connelly took over as a starter in 2016, playing a significant role in Wisconsin’s season-opening win over LSU at Lambeau Field. In his final two seasons Womens Vince Biegel Jersey , he put up almost identical stat lines, with 88 and 89 total tackles, 11 and 10 tackles for loss, and three sacks plus a forced fumble in each campaign. Connelly ran the 40-yard dash in 4.66 seconds at the 2019 Combine.A junior college transfer from Iowa Western Community College, Van Ginkel played two seasons in Madison, recording 6.5 sacks in 2017 and 5.5 last year. He also posted a pair of forced fumbles in each season and picked off a pair of passes as a junior, with those two big plays coming in the Big Ten Championship Game and the Orange Bowl. UPDATE: Three more Badgers are confirmed as visitors this week. The Green Bay Press-Gazette’s Olivia Reiner reports that offensive tackle David Edwards, inside linebacker T.J. Edwards, and safety D’Cota Dixon are also attending this week’s workouts http://www.packerslockerroom.com/authentic-josh-jackson-jersey , along with players from Northern Illinois and Northwestern. Week one feels like a distant memory. The upstart Bears knocked out the Packers’ star quarterback and held a comfortable lead coming out of halftime. But once Aaron Rodgers improbably re-entered the game (*insert Undertaker gif*),it felt like another instant classic comeback was a fait accompli. Fast forward to the teams’ second matchup of the season and things look much different. The Packers are flailing, having suffered a plethora of injuries, a string of befuddling losses, and firing their head coach. The Bears, on the other hand, have gained all the confidence they lacked in their week one collapse. They're playing championship defense and, perhaps most notably, are extremely healthy. But regardless of where these two teams are in their arcs Brett Hundley Jersey White , it all goes out the window when they play each other. Anything can happen, and it often does. Build it and the Super Bowl will come. While that’s not exactly how the sites of the NFL’s championship extravaganza are determined Kerry Hyder Jersey , it sure doesn’t hurt to have a brand new, billion-dollar facility in your city.Including the 2004 game in Houston, the league will have staged nine Super Bowls in metropolitan areas with new stadiums in the past 15 years: Detroit, Phoenix, Dallas, Indianapolis, New York, San Francisco, Minneapolis and, now, Atlanta. Arizona and Houston actually have hosted twice, but obviously neither of those buildings was new the second time around. There’s nothing written on a game plan sheet guaranteeing such an award from the NFL, it’s more a nodding agreement it will happen. And it will once more in Los Angeles in 2022, and very likely in Las Vegas before the end of the next decade.“It really depends, but a world-class stadium is critical, and we are going through a run with Minnesota and Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta and other new buildings,” says Peter O’Reilly, the NFL’s senior vice president of events. “There are lots of factors that come into it in determining where and when we go and what is the right sequence. So that’s not necessarily a truism … though certainly there is a track record of a number of recent buildings that have been built that are incredible facilities.”Atlanta last hosted a Super Bowl in 2000 Graham Glasgow Jersey , when it was hit with severe weather, including ice storms that nearly shut down the city. The NFL didn’t go back until this year, in part because the Georgia Dome no longer was a state-of-the-art venue, and in part because of memories of 2000.Since Mercedes-Benz Stadium opened in 2017, Atlanta has been the site of several major sporting events, including the college football playoff. Atlanta United of MLS has set all sorts of attendance records in the building. Those successes matter in the Super Bowl race.“We do attend and we watch all those events that are coming into a venue,” says O’Reilly, who also oversees the staging of the draft that has become a traveling show and heads to Nashville this April and Las Vegas next year.“Part of the reason we have a policy in place that we don’t play a Super Bowl in the first year after a building opens is you understand and learn from the events and the games in there. One of the positives is a number of the key vendors who work on the Super Bowl work on other major events. Clearly, in this community it’s a really collaborative spirit.”Of course, hosting a Super Bowl is about a lot more than spirit. It’s about dollars, millions of dollars.Economic impact studies tend to show the value of the NFL’s big show ranges from $200 million to $500 million for a city. Plus, more than 100 million viewers across the country are seeing that city being showcased. Minnesota might not have been a winter vacation destination to many people before it was spotlighted for last year’s game.Naturally, Minneapolis wouldn’t have gotten the Super Bowl without having built an ultramodern indoor stadium. The only outdoor game in a cold weather city was in 2014 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, and that was a given once the Giants and Jets agreed to foot most of the bill for the facility. With a wink and a nod, Detroit was destined for a Super Bowl once Ford Field was ready and the Lions moved back downtown from the suburbs. Indianapolis, which put on a sensational Super Bowl week, never would have been considered without Lucas Oil Stadium being constructed.“There’s nothing formal,” explains Marc Ganis Da'Shawn Hand Jersey White , president of Sportscorp, a Chicago-based consulting firm, and an adviser to several team owners. “It is an understanding that if you build a new stadium and have the facilities for a Super Bowl and the community gets behind it, you will get a Super Bowl. Maybe you will only get one, like Indianapolis — as great a job as Indianapolis did, it’s really on the edge of a community that can support a Super Bowl. They made up for it with the great community support.“It is not an issue of how well a franchise is run, either. It’s an issue of the market, the hotel rooms and the stadium. So we know that Miami (2020), Tampa (2021), New Orleans (2024), Texas, Arizona (2023), LA and Las Vegas will get them.”The process for securing a Super Bowl has changed. No longer do cities bid against each other — Ganis notes that a so-called loser in the bidding could be embarrassed despite putting up a very strong presentation, and that a lengthy series of ballots doesn’t look good for anyone. Now, O’Reilly and the owners’ Super Bowl committee go to each club seeking an expression of interest in hosting the game. Many cities know they have no chance, perhaps because of weather concerns at an outdoor stadium — it’s unlikely any such venue in the Northeast except MetLife would be considered — or lack of stadium size or insufficient infrastructure or hotel space. The committee identifies a city that fits best for a particular year and asks it for specifics for hosting.“We end up with optimizing the sequences, avoid a scenario where multiple cities are spending significant time and resources on a bid and ultimately they’re not rewarded,” O’Reilly says.Suggestions that the game could wind up in London seem farfetched Womens Sylvester Williams Jersey , and the NFL certainly would need a franchise there before it could happen. Besides, Ganis says there will never be a shortage of U.S. locales interested in hosting.“I focus on the tremendous amount of new money coming into the community, and not just the week of the Super Bowl, but all the planning and the attention that takes place, and the money spent from outside (the venue) on that. Those things are almost impossible to put a price tag on, as is the visibility over a number of years focused on those two weeks in your city. It is almost always very positive.”Sunday open thread: How many rushing yards will Kerryon Johnson have vs. Cowboys? Kerryon Johnson did all Detroit Lions a favor by ending the horrible 100-yard drought last week against the Patriots. But the Lions didn’t trade up in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft so that Johnson could do that once. They’re hoping he’s got plenty of those kind of performances up his sleeve for years to come.At this point in the season, it’s hard to tell how real the Lions’ running game is. Johnson undoubtedly looks good, but the offensive line has been inconsistent through three games. Additionally, the Patriots have one of the worst run defenses in the league in 2018, so it’s important to view Johnson’s performance through that lens. So what happens this week? How will Johnson’s encore look against the Dallas Cowboys? Today’s Question of the Day is:How many rushing yards will Kerryon Johnson have vs. Cowboys? My answer: The Cowboys have allowed just one 100-yard rusher this season, but it took Seahawks running back Chris Carson 32 carries to get there (3.2 YPC). Saquon Barkley only managed 28 while Christian McCaffrey had 50 with Cam Newton adding 58 of his own. Throw it all together and you have a pretty solid Cowboys run defense. That being said, I’m really starting to believe the Lions have something going on the ground, and as long as the game remains under control, they’re going to try and be as balanced as possible on offense. So I think Johnson will reach 85 yards on around 20 carries. He won’t quite go back-to-back in 100-yard performances, but he will keep the Lions’ rushing attack respectable.Your turn.Tweets from https://twitter.com/PrideOfDetroit/lists/lions-coverage
CINCINNATI (AP) — Drew Brees and the Saints rocked Paul Brown Stadium from the opening drive Vontaze Burfict Jersey White , scoring every time they got the ball except for the last one. Then they cranked up the music in the locker room until the cinderblock walls were vibrating, too.For New Orleans, it was as much fun as it gets in the NFL.Brees threw three touchdown passes in a blistering first half, moving ahead of Brett Favre for second place on the career list, and New Orleans rolled to its eighth straight victory Sunday, 51-14 over the Cincinnati Bengals. Then they blasted the music.“It’s a good time,” said Brees, who was 22 of 25 for 265 yards and a near-perfect passer rating of 150.4. “We know how to have fun when it’s time to have fun.”Brees led the Saints to touchdowns on all five first-half possessions with a nearly perfect performance — only two incompletions. His 17-yard TD to Michael Thomas with 2 seconds left in the half gave him 509 career touchdown passes, one more than Favre.Up next: Peyton Manning’s record 539.“If you play long enough, I guess those things happen,” Brees said. “I consider myself very grateful, very blessed.“Just take ’em one at a time Womens Clark Harris Jersey , keep plugging along, and hopefully there’s more to go”Brees had his way with the Bengals’ historically bad defense , even diving over the pile to score a 1-yard touchdown. Cincinnati (5-4) became the first team in the Super Bowl era to give up 500 yards in three consecutive games; New Orleans finished with 509.The Bengals matched the most lopsided defeat in franchise history and gave up the second-most points in club history. In the first half alone, the Saints piled up 311 yards and had 21 first downs on 40 plays. Brees was 18 of 20 for 214 yards with three touchdowns in the opening half.“I’m kind of in shock after a loss like that,” linebacker Jordan Evans said.In the last four games, the Bengals have given up 481, 551, 576 and 509 yards. They’re on pace to give up the most yards in NFL history.“Obviously, your confidence gets shaken,” coach Marvin Lewis said. “I just addressed that with them. They have to focus and get determined. It’s their job to do it right.”Mark Ingram and Alvin Kamara recognized Dez Bryant by crossing their arms after scoring touchdowns. The former Cowboys receiver signed with the Saints on Wednesday but tore an Achilles tendon in his second practice.“Two days is not a lot of time, and yet there’s a lot of respect,” coach Sean Payton said. The Saints sent the Rams to their first loss last week Trey Hopkins Jersey White , 45-35, and kept the momentum with their highest-scoring game of the season. Ingram had 13 rushes for 104 yards, and Kamara scored twice as New Orleans picked up 244 yards on the ground.“Look, this was a good game, but it wasn’t a perfect game,” Payton said.Pretty close. The only time New Orleans failed to score was when it took a knee at the Bengals 31-yard line to end matters. What’s it like playing in an offense like that?“It’s heaven,” Kamara said.Another encouraging sign for the Saints: Their struggling defense held in check a Bengals offense missing A.J. Green, out indefinitely with an injured toe on his right foot. Andy Dalton went 12 of 20 for 153 yards with two interceptions, including one that Marcus Williams returned 78 yards to set up Brees’ third touchdown throw.“We all had a hand in it,” Dalton said.BAD HISTORYIt’s the fourth time the Bengals have lost a game by 37 points in their history. The club record for points allowed was 52 against Carolina in 2002. The 28 points allowed in the second quarter matched the club record.RED-ZONEDNew Orleans had allowed touchdowns on 20 of opponents’ 28 drives inside the 20-yard line, which ranked 28th out of 32 teams in red zone efficiency. The Bengals managed to get inside the 20-yard line only once, on their opening touchdown drive.LOCKED INBrees has an 89 percent completion percentage when targeting Michael Thomas this season. Thomas finished with eight catches for 70 yards and two touchdowns Clayton Fejedelem Jersey White , including a diving 7-yard catch in the end zone.PRODUCTIVE THOMASThomas has 274 catches in 40 career games, surpassing Odell Beckham Jr., who held the mark for most receptions in NFL history through 40 outings.INJURIESSaints: LT Terron Armstead suffered a shoulder injury in the second quarter.Bengals: CB Dre Kirkpatrick suffered a concussion in the second quarter and didn’t return.UP NEXTSaints: host the Eagles next Sunday.Bengals: play at Baltimore next Sunday. The beat the Ravens earlier this year. CINCINNATI (AP) — Jeff Driskel was better in his second NFL start. Joe Mixon ran for more than 100 yards. A historically bad defense held its own after a rough start. With all that, the Bengals still couldn’t get the one thing they really need.“Need a win, and everything’s better,” coach Marvin Lewis said Monday. They haven’t had one of those since October, leaving Cincinnati (5-8) in a freefall that’s taken it from the top of the AFC North all the way to the bottom.A 26-21 loss to the Chargers was their fifth straight and their seventh in eight games, dropping them behind Cleveland into last place. The Bengals haven’t finished last since 2010, when they went 4-12 overall and lost 10 in a row — their worst losing streak in Lewis’ 16 seasons. They dropped the first eight games of the 2008 season, when they went 4-11-1. Their current five-game drought is the third-longest under Lewis. And there’s no sign it’s going to get appreciably better as the season winds down. That win they need? As elusive as a playoff victory, something they haven’t gotten since the 1990 season.Cincinnati finishes its home schedule Sunday against the Oakland Raiders (3-10), who are coming off a 24-21 victory over Pittsburgh . The Bengals will likely have one of the smallest crowds in Paul Brown Stadium history. Their previous home game Womens Joe Mixon Jersey , a 24-10 loss to Denver, drew only 44,392 fans. The smallest crowd in the stadium’s 19-year history came in 2011, when they drew 41,142 for a game against Buffalo. The Bengals are averaging 51,637 fans this season, the second-smallest attendance in stadium history behind the 2011 season.Any hopes for a strong finish ended in Los Angeles when a few out-of-character coaching decisions and a couple of unfathomable penalties led to another loss.Lewis made some bold decisions that ended badly. He decided to go for a 2-point conversion in the second quarter trailing 14-12, and it failed. He also decided to go for it on fourth-and-inches from the Cincinnati 35-yard line on the opening drive of the second half. Mixon was stopped short, leaving the Chargers in range for a field goal.“It was fourth down and 4 inches basically,” Lewis said. “It’s aggressive, but it is 4 inches. We’ve got to be able to pick that up.”Otherwise, Mixon had one of his best games Vincent Rey Jersey White , carrying a career-high 26 times for 111 yards and a touchdown. Driskel was 18 of 27 for 170 yards with a touchdown and no interceptions during his second start in place of Andy Dalton, out for the season with a torn thumb ligament.Driskel led the Bengals to a touchdown with 1:54 left, but he was sacked while trying to throw for a tying 2-point conversion. The Chargers recovered an onside kick and added a field goal that finished it off.And essentially finished off the Bengals’ season, too.“What you did last week doesn’t gain anything,” Lewis said. “We’ve got to go back and do it better and find a new way, find a better way.”TAKING A DIVEThe Bengals had an apparent touchdown overturned because of a new rule interpretation this season. Driskel dived toward the end zone in the second quarter and slid in for what was initially ruled a touchdown, but he landed inches shy of the goal line and the ball was spotted there.Under the rule, a runner who dives is down where they touch the ground, an effort to protect them from hits. A penalty for a false start on the next play forced the Bengals to settle for a field goal.“It’s an unintended consequence of the (rule) change that’s made,” Lewis said Monday. “And that’s what happens when people don’t think about all the parts of it.”
