On a three-game winning streak Bennie Logan Jersey , the Tennessee Titans return home for their last two games needing some help to get back to the playoffs for a second year in a row. There, they’ll face the 7-7 Washington Redskins tomorrow, and they are also fighting for a playoff spot with the Wild Card and NFC East races slipping away from them.If you’ve followed me on Twitter, you’ve probably seen me do a lot of charting on quarterback hits. Quarterback hits include sacks and plays where the quarterback was hit after releasing the pass (hits on penalties do not count unless those penalties were declined). And as it turns out, The Titans defense and Redskins offense are polar opposites. This time for this week’s Titans Enemy Profile, there won’t be any film breakdowns. Instead, this will be statistical breakdown—to be more specific—quarterback hits.First, let’s talk about the Redskins. On defense, they’ve produced 83 QB hits through 15 weeks, the 16th most in the league. Since Week 9 (the second half of the season), they’re 13th in QB hits produced with 40. Decent numbers to say the least as guys like Ryan Kerrigan and Jonathan Allen have cranked up the pressures this season, highlighting a talented defensive line. But here’s where it gets interesting: The Washington offense has allowed the 14th most QB hits on the season (87) and are tied with the Dolphins for second most allowed since Week 9 (51). Yikes. It doesn’t help that the team has lost their two starting quarterbacks for the season and have been decimated with injuries on the offensive line. That puts the Titans defense at a great advantage, as they have produced the fourth most quarterback hits since Week 9 (47) and are tied with the Vikings for 13th most on the season (85). On offense, Tennessee has allowed the ninth fewest QB hits all season (66), are tied with the Broncos for the 12th fewest allowed since Week 9 (35) and the second fewest allowed since Week 13 (10, behind the Browns’ 5).The Titans defense isn’t perfect Womens Adam Humphries Jersey , but with guys up front like Harold Landry, Jurrell Casey, Rashaan Evans and Jayon Brown gelling together, it’s made for some excellent games of defense in recent weeks. The offense clearly hasn’t been close to consistent, but Marcus Mariota has been able to side step pressure, and the offensive line has limited the hits to an extent. With both sides of the line playing well, that’ll need to continue tomorrow with the season on the line.Keeping Up With Marcus Mariota: Week 5, 2018 I for sure need to stop picking the Titans to win games now. I’m ruining what could have been a 5-0 start to the year. With that out of the way, welcome to another edition of Keeping Up With Marcus Mariota. Last week, Mariota completed 14 of 26 passes at Buffalo for 129 yards, zero touchdowns and an interception for a 51.6 passer rating. Obviously, the expectation is Mariota played a bad game after playing at a high level the previous week against the Eagles. But by looking at the incompletions he tossed, something doesn’t look right. So here’s what happened on all 12 of Mariota’s incompletions:1. Thrown in the area of Jonnu Smith who was tightly covered.2. Late, behind Derrick Henry.3. Corey Davis stopped running, was contacted.4. Was trying to throw the ball away under intense pressure, but the arc of his passmeant the ball was nearly intercepted.5. His actual interception. Nick Williams completely let the defensive back come through his window and pick the pass off.6. Wide of Luke Stocker7. Through Taywan Taylor’s hands on a catch he should’ve made.8. Pressure disrupts his pass to Dion Lewis.9. Batted at the line of scrimmage looking for Corey Davis.10. Thrown away under pressure from Tremaine Edmunds.11. Jump ball to Sharpe Jeffery Simmons Tennessee Titans Jersey , not a smart decision, fortunate to get away with an incompletion.12. Accurate pass to Nick Williams that should’ve been caught for a touchdown but was instead dropped. So looking at Mariota’s incompletions, 9 of his 12 came from pass disruptions, a lack of separation, bad receiver play, drops, miscommunications, and throwing the ball away. If Williams catches the touchdown pass, we might not be talking about how “bad” Mariota played on Sunday. Another concern is how conservative Matt LaFleur’s play calling was. Sure, Buffalo’s defense has some quality players, but Tennessee only attempted four passes of at least 16 air yards. Perhaps LaFleur doesn’t trust the limited receiving corps, but With Corey Davis lighting it up downfield the previous week, it’s baffling. With that said, let’s highlight some notable passes Mariota threw on Sunday and briefly analyze them.gamepass.nfl.comHere, Nick Williams is running a simple go route against zone coverage, yet he couldn’t even do that correctly. Mariota gets clean protection—though really it’s hard not to when you’re releasing the ball that quickly—and it should be a pass that Williams can catch. But Williams has no spatial awareness on this play Youth Jeffery Simmons Jersey , so he has no idea the defensive back is coming into his window. Williams gets overwhelmed, screwing his quarterback over as the pass is picked off.gamepass.nfl.comThe Bills’ play-by-play listed this as an overthrown ball, but to me, this is one Taywan Taylor should’ve caught for a touchdown. Mariota is under heavy pressure this time and is able to get the ball off just before getting hit. I’ve mentioned in the past that Taylor’s catch radius is extremely limited. He’s extremely effective as a screen and underneath receiver, but when asked to expand his frame he’s been a major letdown. He’s asked to slightly contort his body to make this catch, but instead it goes through his hands and ends up as a dropped touchdown.gamepass.nfl.comAnd speaking of dropped touchdowns, Nick Williams ultimately sealed his fate in Tennessee with a massive drop that would’ve given the Titans a lead trailing 10-6. Mariota extends the play and Williams does a nice job of breaking open, but the ball inexplicably goes through his hands on the Titans’ second dropped touchdown of the game.Marcus Mariota wasn’t spectacular against the Bills, but the play calling was way too conservative, the receivers could barely separate, and when they did they either dropped the pass or were not on the same page as Mariota. I thought he played a solid game in spite of the situation around him, and it’s on LaFleur to correct his mistakes (from an otherwise solid season as offensive coordinator) and for the Titans to consider trading for a receiver.Still, at least we got to see Mariota leap over a defender.gamepass.nfl.comThat was awesome.
Well http://www.thetitanslockerroom.com/authentic-johnathan-cyprien-jersey , that was a turn of events. The Jaguars were on the doorstep of taking the lead. They reached the 1-yard line after getting on the scoreboard with a safety but didn’t score in a 14-play drive. After converting a fourth-and-one at the Titans 5, Jacksonville went for it on fourth-and-goal at the 1. Leonard Fournette was stopped for no gain after begin stopped for no gain from the 1 on second down. Cody Kessler overthew open fullback Tommy Bohanon on third down from the 1.On the Titans’ first play from scrimmage, Derrick Henry went 99 yards to tie Tony Dorsett’s NFL record for the longest run in NFL history. Henry broke three tackles in going from end zone to end zone.Henry has three 70-plus yard rushing touchdowns since 2017, the most in the NFL Nate Palmer Jersey White , according to NFL Research.Washington running back Adrian Peterson had a career-best 90-yard run for a touchdown on Monday night.Henry now has 129 yards and two touchdowns on only six carries. The Titans missed the extra point so they lead 13-2.Report: Titans sign Steven Terrell Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network is reporting that the Titans have signed Steven Terrell:We haven’t heard anything official about Dane Cruikshank’s injury yet, but Jonathan Hutton said this morning that Cruikshank was on the sideline last night with his shoulder in a sling. I don’t have any #sources here, but I am going to go out on a limb here and say that the fact that the Titans have signed a safety isn’t a great sign for Cruikshank. I hate to speculate too much here, but you hate it for a guy to have his rookie year cut short by an injury in the preseason.Terrell has played with the Jaguars http://www.thetitanslockerroom.com/authentic-brian-orakpo-jersey , Texans, Seahawks and most recently the Chiefs after his career at Texas A&M.The injuries at safety are really piling up. Last week they placed Johnathan Cyprien on IR with a torn ACL. They added Kenny Vaccaro, who ended up playing with the starters last night in Green Bay.
TAMPA Chandler Catanzaro Jersey , Fla. (AP) — Gerald McCoy is puzzled when he hears people question the ability of fellow NFL players, particularly backup quarterbacks such as Nick Foles and Ryan Fitzpatrick.“It’s the NFL,” Tampa Bay’s six-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle said. “Everybody’s good.”Foles’ success filling in for the injured Carson Wentz is one of the biggest reasons why the Philadelphia Eagles (1-0) were able to win the Super Bowl after losing their starting quarterback late last season.Fitzpatrick has McCoy’s Buccaneers (1-0) off to a promising start without suspended starter Jameis Winston after playing arguably the best game of a 14-year career that includes stints with seven teams.“I don’t get when a person, an analyst or fan or anybody says: ‘Oh, he’s not good.’ … “That’s a horrible thing to say about an NFL player because there are people who would give anything to be in the NFL,” McCoy said. “They just didn’t have what it takes to be ‘not good.'”McCoy calls Foles “MVP” because the Eagles quarterback has been the most valuable player in a Pro Bowl, as well as last season’s Super Bowl.“He always laughs when I call him that,” the ninth-year pro said, looking ahead to facing the defending NFL champions Sunday at Raymond James Stadium.“He’s a great player. He doesn’t do more than he’s asked to do,” McCoy added. “He’s a great leader, and just a great guy overall.”Those are some of the same attributes McCoy sees in Fitzpatrick, who threw for a career-best 417 yards, four touchdowns and zero interceptions to help the Bucs surprise New Orleans 48-40 on the road last week. The 35-year-old Fitzpatrick, who has 120 career starts and is one of just four players in NFL history to toss TD passes for seven different franchises, also rushed for a TD.“Confidence is a huge thing, whether you’re out there or not,” Fitzpatrick said, addressing what it takes to be a successful backup. After going 2-1 filling in for an injured Winston last season, Fitzpatrick is slated for a minimum three starts this year while the No. 1 overall pick from the 2015 draft serves a suspension for violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy.“But also, more so than my confidence in myself … is when you’re in the huddle, whether you’re the starter or you’re the backup, you can feel from the playcaller, you can feel by the guys looking at you whether they have confidence in you,” Fitzpatrick said.“I think with all the different experiences I’ve had Jason Pierre-Paul Jersey , I just continue to become a better player,” Fitzpatrick added. “Whether people think that or see that, I’m better right now than at any point in my career. A lot of that is mentally, and whatever else.”Foles, who threw for 117 yards, no touchdowns and one interception in Philadelphia’s 18-12 season-opening victory over Atlanta, is 2-0 in career starts against the Bucs. He completed 66 percent of his passes for 677yards, five TDs and zero picks in leading the Eagles to road victories in 2012 and 2013.Eagles coach Doug Pederson started 17 games during a playing career that spanned 10 seasons with four teams. So, he has plenty of insight into what it takes to be an effective backup.“I think in the case of both Nick and Ryan, they’ve studied the game for so long, they’re veteran players, they’ve started and played in this league. … You can’t discount that,” Pederson said. “When we lost our starter for the season (last year) … the guys rallied around Nick, supported Nick and never once doubted what Nick was able to do. I think that’s the same thing in Tampa Bay (with Winston’s suspension).”Some things to know when the Eagles visit the Bucs:THE FIRST ONEFoles earned his first career win his rookie season at Tampa Bay on Dec. 9, 2012. He threw for 381 yards and two touchdowns, including the winning score to Jeremy Maclin from the 1 with no time left on the clock. Foles also had a 15-yard TD run in the game. The Eagles finished 4-12 that year, Andy Reid’s final one in Philadelphia. Foles was 1-6.“I just remember sitting at my locker after the game thinking that wasn’t easy to get that win. It was really special,” Foles said. “At that point, I didn’t know how it was going to be because I hadn’t won and it was a tough year for us.”ON THE MENDThe status of Bucs receiver DeSean Jackson (shoulder/concussion) for Sunday is uncertain after the speedy 11th-year pro had five receptions for 146 yards and two touchdowns in Tampa Bay’s win over the Saints last week. It was the best game the former Eagles star has had since joining the Bucs in 2017. Jackson didn’t practice Wednesday, but participated on a limited basis Thursday. With Brent Grimes still not practicing because of a sore groin and Vernon Hargreaves III on injured reserve after hurting his shoulder in the opener, the Bucs could be without their top two cornerbacks against the Eagles. That figures to mean bigger roles for rookies Carlton Davis III and M.J. Stewart.BRADHAM’S BACKEagles linebacker Nigel Bradham returns to the lineup after serving a one-game suspension in Week 1. Bradham was the team’s leading tackler last year and took over playcalling in the huddle after Jordan Hicks was injured.“He’s an important part of our defense,” defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz said. “We were able to cover up some things in his absence. We’ve had to do that for a lot of different situations with different players. It’ll be good to get him back for sure.”Hicks returned to the lineup last week after rupturing an Achilles tendon last October. He had 1 1/2 sacks. Mock draft season is upon us, and the NFL analysts of the world are speculating about what each of the 32 franchises might do three months from now.Names like Jonah Williams, Ed Oliver Jameis Winston Jersey White , Devin White, and Alabama running back Josh Jacobs have all been tied to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in recent versions. On Tuesday, Lance Zierlein of NFL.com published a new mock draft, and selected Alabama’s Quinnen Williams with pick five of the 2019 NFL Draft. Now, this likely isn’t the first time you’ve seen this Rolling Tide Williams mentioned with the Bucs. He’s a fairly popular name around these parts. Here’s what Zierlein wrote about the pick,Interesting insight, and if you ask me, drafting Williams means McCoy is likely playing elsewhere in 2019.However, my favorite part of this particular mock draft isn’t necessarily who the Bucs drafted, but who wasn’t taken at all in the first round. While Greedy Williams, Deandre Baker and Byron Murphy all came off the board in the first 32 picks there are several interesting names that didn’t.Specifically, Notre Dame cornerback Julian Love, Penn State corner Amani Oruwariye, and safeties Nasir Adderely (Delaware) and Deionte Thompson (Alabama). Now, it’s not likely all of these guys will be left sitting when day two of the actual draft comes around, but chances are there will be two or three of them available. If Quinnen Williams were to be there at number five for the Bucs to steal, combining him with a secondary defender listed here would be a very nice start to Jason Licht’s 2019 class. With avery deep offensive line class, a trade up back into the second round or a third round offensive lineman like Dennis Daley who could be groomed to eventually replace Demar Dotson at the right tackle spot.If the Bucs wanted to throw in a one-two punch of offense and defense in the first two rounds, Wisconsin’s David Edwards was left off Zierlein’s first round and could challenge for a starting role as early as training camp assuming his shoulder is 100%.Either way, as we look at these mock drafts and start to look at how the dominoes might fall following the first day, it’s easy to get excited about the potential talents who may call Tampa home for 2019 and beyond.Oh, and Kyler Murray went fourth-overall to the Oakland Raiders. Easily the highest I’ve seen him up to this point and the highest we will see him barring trades.
It’s anyone’s guess as to what will happen with this position."As we continue our free agency preview for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Vernon Hargreaves Jersey , we will take a look at the linebacker position. Tampa Bay has some tough choices ahead of them in this department. The biggest question concerning this group is what to do with Kwon Alexander, the Bucs’ starting middle linebacker and defensive leader. But it doesn’t stop with him. The Bucs carried nine linebackers on their roster at one point in 2018. They only have five of those players returning in 2019. Lavonte David, Kendall Beckwith, Devante Bond, Jack Cichy, and Riley Bullough are the only players under contract to return in 2019.So it’s pretty obvious that the Bucs will have to fill these spots either through free agency or the draft.Just like the last few previews, we will use overall stats and Pro Football Focus grades to give context into what type of season/career each player has had. That will help determine how much each player may command in free agency. And this is just another reminder, but I have not watched any film on these players yet. This is strictly from a monetary/contractual/potential fit vantage point. Since we also don’t know exactly what type of defense Todd Bowles will employ, it’s important to take a look at players that can play in multiple fronts. Bruce Arians did say that the coaching staff does plan to work around the players they have, so that’s important to keep in mind as well. That being said, here are the top four graded linebackers for performance context. I was able to find the top inside and EDGE/outside linebacker in a 3-4 system and the top MIKE and SAM/WILL linebacker in a 4-3 system. I’ll start with the top linebacker and EDGE in a 3-4:Zach Brown, ILB, Washington RedskinsPFF Grade: 89.2 Overall/84.1 Run Defense/84.4 Coverage/68.7 Pass Rush/927 Total SnapsKhalil Mack, EDGE, Chicago BearsPFF Grade: 90.7 Overall/86.0 Run Defense/87.4 Coverage/73.9 Pass Rush/819 Total SnapsAnd here is the top MIKE and SAM/WILL in a 4-3:Bobby Wagner, MIKE, Seattle SeahawksPFF Grade: 91.8 Overall/91.6 Run Defense/90.5 Coverage/86.7 Pass Rush/999 Total SnapsLorenzo Alexander, SAM, Buffalo BillsPFF Grade: 85.7 Overall/82.4 Run Defense/79.9 Coverage/70.7 Pass Rush/630 Total SnapsSo, now that we have all of this information, let’s take a look at some potential fits for the Bucs in 2019. 1) Kwon Alexander, Middle Linebacker, Tampa Bay BuccaneersPFF Grade: 59.1 Overall/53.3 Run Defense/57.1 Coverage/78.8 Pass Rush/366 Total SnapsJust like the Adam Humphries decision, this will be a tough one for the Bucs. Alexander has played well during his time in Tampa Bay, but he has also had his share of moments where he hasn’t looked so great. He tore his ACL midway through the season in 2018 and it’s possible he could be ready to go by the start of 2019. He posted a video of himself rehabbing his knee on January 15th.And another one of him squatting on January 29th. It looks like everything is in place for a 2019 return. But Alexander may have more of an impact off the field rather than on it. He is known as a true teammate, a vocal leader, and a player that brings out the dog in his teammates. As with most in-house free agents, Tampa Bay has to figure out three things:Where does he fit?Do you franchise him?Do you sign him long-term?The only semi-certain answer to any of those questions is how much Alexander will cost if the Bucs do in fact decide to franchise him. His price tag will run close to $10.5 million if he is in fact franchised. Alexander’s career was budding before his knee injury in 2018. He led the league in solo tackles with 108 in 2016 and followed that up with a Pro Bowl appearance in 2017. One would think he is going to want to get paid pretty well. There’s always a chance that he’ll give the Bucs a hometown discount, but don’t expect that to happen. He is also project to make $10.2 million off a long-term deal in 2019, so it may be in the Bucs’ best interest to go that route, but the ACL could be the determining factor in what happens. 2) C.J. Mosley, Inside Linebacker, Baltimore RavensPFF Grade: 73.6 Overall/80.1 Run Defense/57.3 Pass Rush/66.5 Coverage/943 Total SnapsI know, I know. I’ve been preaching this whole offseason about how cap-strapped the Bucs are, but I’m sorry. I love this kid and I would love it even more if Tampa Bay could find a way to coax him away from Baltimore. That’s the biggest issue for the Bucs. The Ravens should have plenty of cap space, so it’s likely that Tampa Bay is going to have to pay him well above his projected $9.7 million salary. The Ravens have also recently stated that they intend on keeping him around for the long haul. A boy can dream, though Ali Marpet Jersey , right? But it’s not like it wouldn’t be worth it. Mosley has the fourth most combined tackles amongst all linebackers since he entered the league in 2014. He is fifth in solo tackles, 16th in tackles for loss, 21st in quarterback hits, and 34th in sacks. CJ Mosley would be a major addition to the Bucs.Mitch Stringer-USA TODAY SportsWhen you condense those stats down to just the inside linebacker position, he has the third most combined tackles, third most solo tackles, sixth most tackles for loss, seventh most quarterback hits, and 12th most sacks since 2014. Mosley is a fast, instinctive, hard-hitting player that can do just about everything. If the Bucs can move some money around, then he would likely be worth every penny. When it comes to free agency, you’re most likely going to overpay based off the market, but in Mosely’s case - it’ll be a bargain if you can get him for less than $11 million/year. 3) Preston Smith, EDGE, Washington Redskins PFF Grade: 76.9 Overall/68.4 Pass Rush/73.2 Run Defense/76.2 Coverage/834 Total SnapsSmith’s situation is tough to figure out, but there is a definite chance he could end up on the Bucs, especially if Bruce Arians/Todd Bowles find a way to utilize him. He basically bet on himself in 2018, foregoing a contract extension with the Redskins with probable hopes of hitting it big in free agency. That has seemed to pay off - Smith is projected to earn over $11 million per year this offseason. But that seems a bit high for a player that made just $1.8 million in 2018 and is coming off a career-low year in sacks. The low sack total is even more distressing when you consider the fact that the Redskins brought in defensive talent to help increase Smith’s impact. Washington’s salary cap situation isn’t all that great, either. The nearly $21 million in cap room isn’t that much when you think about the fact that Brandon Scherff - and others - are due a new contract after this season. On the flip side, it’s still possible that Reuben Foster will be suspended by the NFL. If that’s the case, then the Redskins will need Smith more than ever to help shoulder the load. Smith’s strength is rushing the passer, evidenced by his 20.5 sacks in his first three years. He’s been noted as a hard worker and selfless player, as well. That’s something the Bucs need in a bad way. Even though the Bucs improved the pass rush in 2018, it still needs a lot of help and Smith could be the guy to help out in a big way. This is all tricky to project, especially since we don’t really know what to expect from the defensive scheme. Regardless, it looks like the Bucs may have to shell out some money if they want decent production at the linebacker spot in 2019. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers must be licking their chops for the chance to go against the Atlanta defense. Then again, the Falcons' offense is surely just as pumped to get on the field against the Bucs.A fan of stingy defenses? You've come to the wrong place. The scoreboard at Mercedes-Benz Stadium figures to get a workout Sunday in the matchup between NFC South rivals. Tampa Bay (2-2) has surrendered more points per game than any team in the league (34.75), while the Falcons (1-4) are right on their heels with an average of 32.6.The Bucs' defensive woes have put the heat on coordinator Mike Smith, a former head coach of the Falcons. Smith's boss, Dirk Koetter, has resisted calls to make a change."Every week, every game, it's way bigger than any one guy," the Tampa Bay coach said. "It's never all one person's fault and it's never all one person's credit."Smith said he's confident the Bucs can turn things around."We did some things in the first three games that you can look forward and say, 'Gosh darn, those guys Shaquil Barrett Jersey , they've got a chance to do some things well,'" Smith said. "We've been an inconsistent group and really that's frustrating as a coach because you don't like to put the inconsistencies out on the field."The Falcons are on the defensive about their defense, as well. For the first time since 1987, Atlanta has given up at least 37 points in three straight games. It would be easy to point to a rash of injuries to key players. Safeties Ricardo Allen and Keanu Neal are both out for the season, linebacker Deion Jones will miss at least eight games, and tackle Grady Jarrett sat out last week's contest with a sprained ankle."We will never make excuses," defensive coordinator Marquand Manuel said. "We are professionals. We're asking the guys to dominate their gap and their job. I think any man that puts on a helmet should be able to do that, what we're asking them to do. With the ability that you have, if you give us the maximum, we know that's just enough."Tampa Bay will be looking to strike quickly. Each of the last three weeks, the Falcons have surrendered long touchdown drives on their opponents' first possession."They've been marching it down on us pretty easy," defensive end Takk McKinley moaned. Some other things to watch for when the Falcons host the Buccaneers:WINSTON RETURNSQuarterback Jameis Winston will get his first start of the season for the Bucs.He served a three-game suspension for violating the league's personal conduct policy and came off the bench in Tampa Bay's last game. After a bye week, the No. 1 job again belongs to Winston.Journeyman Ryan Fitzpatrick became the first quarterback in NFL history to throw for 400 yards in three straight games while Winston was sidelined, but the "FitzMagic" show came to a crashing halt in a 48-10 loss to Chicago.Nevertheless, Koetter praised his team for staying competitive while its starting QB was out."We're not exactly where we want to be," the coach said, "but we're also right where we need to be as far as competing for the next 12 weeks."BALANCING ACTThe Falcons are at their best when there's not much discrepancy between the number of running and passing plays. In their lone victory, a 31-24 triumph over the Carolina Panthers in Week 2, the Falcons ran 32 times for 170 yards and two touchdowns while completing 23 of 28 passes for 272 yards and two more scores. But in last Sunday's blowout loss to the Steelers , Atlanta ran just 19 times for 62 yards and went to the air 45 times."That's part of our identity on offense," coach Dan Quinn said. "We've got to make sure the run game and the play-action pass go hand in hand. That is always at the top of our thinking. When we do that, we're at our best."NOT-SO-SPECIAL TEAMSAtlanta has given up blocked punts in two of the last three games, leading to a pair of short touchdown drives. Both miscues were simply a matter of blockers getting beaten: Eric Saubert on one play, rookie Foyesade Oluokun on the other."It is 100 percent unacceptable for that to happen," Quinn said. "We'd like to get that squared away so it never rears its head again."BUCS DOWN WITH JPPJason Pierre-Paul, who was acquired in a trade with the Giants , has been a force on Tampa Bay's defensive line. Over his past three games, he has four sacks and caused a fumble. Now, he's going against an Atlanta line that gave up six sacks to the Steelers last weekend."Jason is such a competitive guy," Smith said. "We want to have a rotation and it's hard to get him off the field because he wants to play every snap."TOUGH STARTThe Falcons are off to their worst start since 2013 ."We didn't expect to be here," Quinn said. "But we don't expect to stay here, either."The last time Atlanta began a season 1-5 was 2007, a dismal campaign marred by the downfall of franchise quarterback Michael Vick, who went to prison for dogfighting, and coach Bobby Petrino abandoning the team after only 13 games.AP Sports Writer Fred Goodall contributed to this report.

In less than two weeks (less, not more) the NFL draft will be underway. In the meantime, I’m going to fight my allergies as spring is coming. I was in Palm Springs last week and in between my flights to Palm Springs I fought a nasty allergy outbreak, as is tradition for Seattle weather in April to May. The good news is, once the draft rolls around, I’m usually done sneezing. The ball was just slightly overthrown, bouncing off the tip of the receivers’ fingers as he fell out of the back on the end zone. Manning went right back at Witherspoon on the very next play, this time completing the 20-yard touchdown to Beckham over the top of the 49ers’ cornerback. The play sparked the Giants’ eventual comeback.Witherspoon threw up his arms in disgust in the direction of safety Antone Exum Jr. Aaron Burbridge Jersey , seemingly placing the blame on the 49ers’ backup safety starting in place of the injured Jaquiski Tartt. Coach Kyle Shanahan was asked after the game if he was accepting of Witherspoon’s gesture.“No I am not.” Shanahan said. “Man up. Don’t put that on tape. We’ll deal with it when we come in.”Veteran cornerback Richard Sherman had a similar reaction when asked about Witherspoon’s frustrations, but also placed some of the blame on the defense’s inability to get the correct personnel on the field prior to the play.“You should never do that. That’s like a cardinal rule of football,” Sherman said at the podium. “You’re expecting guys to be where they’re supposed to be and, unfortunately, we didn’t get the personnel that we needed to on the field.”The 49ers’ embattled second-year cornerback was asked about Shanahan’s reaction to his on-field frustrations after the game in the locker room.“I was just mad at myself for allowing a touchdown. Can’t do that,” Witherspoon said. “I know that, playing corner, I know I got to be better than that Jimmie Ward Jersey , and it’s something I got to improve on.”Witherspoon also drew a critical pass interference flag against Beckham during Giants’ game-winning drive. The 16-yard penalty turned a second-and-20 into an automatic first down. The Giants scored five plays later, taking the four-point lead with :53 seconds remaining.“I did.” Witherspoon said when asked if he disagreed with the call. “But I also disagree with me not turning my head because I could’ve had an opportunity for an interception on that play. Once again, just self-inflicted wounds.”Despite Witherspoon’s struggles in 2018, benched twice earlier in the season, the third-round pick in 2017 remains positive about his opportunity with the 49ers.“The season’s been a blessing,” Witherspoon said. “Every opportunity I have to play this game is an incredible opportunity for me. I’m appreciative of every single second of it. The season can’t go better than this because it’s all in God’s plan and I’m on His path and I’m doing it firmly and as a believer. So, I have no complaints.”
Giants square off on Monday Night Football this week Colin Kaepernick Jersey , with plenty of draft implications to consider. In the meantime, Sunday has brought the 49ers a couple helpful breaks. The Buffalo Bills thumped the New York Jets, wining 41-10 in spite of starting Matt Barkley at quarterback. Josh Allen should be back next week, but the “anybody but Nathan Peterman” strategy paid dividends this week. The Bills improve to 3-7 with the win.In Cleveland, the Browns got big days from rookie quarterback Baker Mayfield (three TD passes) and rookie running back Nick Chubb (a record-setting 92-yard touchdown run in a 28-16 win over the Atlanta Falcons. The Browns improve to 3-6-1 with the win. Both wins mean if the 49ers beat the Giants on Monday, they will likely not drop behind the Bills. They could fall into a tie, but the 49ers have the weaker strength of schedule for the tiebreaker edge. The 49ers have a shot to beat both the Giants this week and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after the bye, so teams near them winning is always a plus. The only other game of significant note for now saw Arizona lose 26-14 to Kansas City. The Cardinals gave the Chiefs a tough time and covered the spread Tarvarius Moore Jersey , but they could not take advantage of some opportunities and dropped to 2-7. The 49ers still hold the SOS tiebreaker edge. The afternoon slate features the Oakland Raiders hosting the Los Angeles Chargers. The Raiders are pretty awful, and I think they end up with the No. 1 or No. 2 pick. However, we can still root for them to mess up their own draft position!I enjoy watching the 49ers win games, but I also recognize that odds are pretty good Nick Mullens is not the second coming of Joe Montana. I’m fine rooting for the team to win but also being plenty happy with other teams winning to keep the 49ers in a decent draft position.ESPN ranks C.J Beathard in the bottom three for total QBR There was a lot of skepticism for when C.J. Beathard made his start on Sunday against the Los Angeles Chargers. After all, this is a guy who had a 54.9 completion percentage. When the San Francisco 49ers left the field with a loss, there was plenty of blame to go around, but Beathard didn’t deserve any of it. That didn’t stop ESPN from ranking him in the bottom three of QBR. Keep in mind, QBR is a bit of a strange ranking. It’s only used by ESPN on the regular Kentavius Street Jersey , and it isn’t to be brought up in place of passer rating. It’s the same rating that Tim Tebow got better numbers than Aaron Rodgers — so, that may be all you need to know.Beathard finished with a QBR of 21.9 (very bad) and a passer rating of 82.9. Only two quarterbacks ranked worse: Josh Allen of the Buffalo Bills (5.1) and Ryan Tannehill of the Miami Dolphins (4.5) Here’s what ESPN’s Hank Gargiulo had to say about Beathard: He’s definitely doesn’t belong in the 90s, not even the 70s, but Beathard played much better than a 21.9 rating. We can all agree the first interception was not at all his fault and the second one was less on him and more on other surrounding circumstances.Meanwhile, Tampa Bay Buccaneer quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, who got benched in the first half after three points and an interception on six possessions, didn’t even make the bottom three with his 27.9 QBR listed in the article. So there’s that. Or is it? Because his game log on ESPN.com has him with a 14.9 QBR. This ranking confuses me.

Thielen went over the 100-catch mark for the season. While it’s been a great year for Thielen Rasheem Green Jersey , it hasn’t been a great game.He has only three catches for 23 yards and injured his ankle when Seahawks cornerback Shaquill Griffin accidentally rolled over the back of Thielen’s leg while defending a pass in the fourth quarter. The Vikings list him as questionable to return.Minnesota also lost right tackle Brian O'Neill in the fourth quarter as he limped off after being rolled from behind. He joins Hall of Famers Cris Carter and Randy Moss.Thielen now has 101 catches for 1,189 yards and nine touchdowns this season.: Thielen returned on the Vikings’ next series and made a 35-yard catch. The Arizona Cardinals signed oft-injured, rarely-great, yet always well-paid Sam Bradford to an absurd 1-year, $20 million contract with an option for $20 million more for 2019. This proved to be an awful move, and he was benched in his third game and downgraded to inactive after the team promoted Josh Rosen to starting quarterback.Arizona has acknowledged its wasteful spending by cutting Bradford outright, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Bradford led the Cardinals to only three touchdowns through three games Will Dissly Jersey , and he was yanked from the Chicago Bears game after a series of turnovers that turned a possible upset win over Chicago into a loss. He threw for just 400 yards on 80 attempts, committed seven turnovers, and boasted a QBR of 25.8 at the time of his benching.Oh yeah, and then there’s the damage of how much money they paid for not even a month’s worth of totally ineffective playing time. Here’s a representation of the Cardinals front office when they gave Bradford such a ridiculous contract. With the Cardinals sitting at 2-6, they’ve fired their offensive coordinator Mike McCoy and now sent their day one starting quarterback packing, leaving Mike Glennon as Rosen’s backup. DETROIT (AP) — Ted Lindsay lived to do what he thought was right. He pioneered the first NHL players’ union despite intense opposition from team management, began the tradition of taking the Stanley Cup closer to fans by skating it around the ice and refused to attend his own Hall of Fame induction ceremony because only men were allowed.“I was led by a feeling of fairness,” Lindsay once said.Lindsay, the 5-foot-8, 160-pound tough guy who provided muscle and meanness on the Detroit Red Wings‘ famed “Production Line” of the 1950s, died Monday at the age of 93 in his home in Michigan, according to Lew LaPaugh http://www.officialkings.com/authentic-adidas-dustin-brown-jersey , his son-in-law and president of the Ted Lindsay Foundation, which raises money for autism research. The player known as “Terrible Ted” was one of the game’s best left wings and an 11-time All-Star who played on four Stanley Cup winners in the early 1950s. Lindsay, Sid Abel and Gordie Howe formed an offensive juggernaut of a line that helped make Detroit one of the first of the NHL’s great postwar dynasties and they had a fitting nickname in the Motor City.He finished his NHL career with 379 goals and 472 assists in 1,068 games with 14 of his 17 seasons with Detroit. With Howe and Lindsay centered first by Abel and then by Al Delvecchio, the Red Wings won Stanley Cups in 1950, 1952, 1954 and 1955. The Red Wings retired his No. 7 in 1991.Lindsay is credited with beginning the ritual in which players skate around the rink holding the Stanley Cup they have just won.“I saw it sitting there, and I thought, ‘I’ll just pick it up and I’ll take it over,'” Lindsay recalled in an interview with The Associated Press in 2013.“I just moved along the boards. I didn’t have it over my head. I had it so they could read it. I wasn’t starting a tradition. I was just taking care of my fans that paid our salary.”Lindsay took his toughness off the ice to organize a players’ union despite opposition from team executives and without the support of Howe, perhaps the most famous hockey player of all. Lindsay pressed on anyway without the backing of “Mr. Hockey.”“All of us who were involved in trying to establish the players’ association weren’t the ones who needed it,” Lindsay explained. “It was for the fringe players that were the worst off. When I got caught up in this, I was so grateful to the game for all it had done for me. But it was a dictatorship on the part of the owners, who didn’t realize any of us had a brain.”At one point, Lindsay gathered secretly with a handful of players in New York in 1957. The next day Jake Muzzin Jersey , Red Wings general manager Jack Adams was very angry about it.“He was ranting and raving,” Lindsay recalled in an interview with the NHLPA . “But, I’d do the same thing.”Lindsay, who was named president of the short-lived union, was traded to Chicago the next summer.“It didn’t matter that they traded me,” he said in 1995. “I have a Red Wing on my forehead and on my behind and on my heart. That will never change.”The NHL Players’ Association was formed for good in 1967 — a decade after the Lindsay-led attempt to unionize — and the organization put Lindsay’s name on its version of the MVP award. The honor, which is chosen by an NHLPA vote, was previously called the Lester B. Pearson Award after the former Canadian prime minister.“On the ice, Ted Lindsay was one of the best players to ever to put on a pair of skates,” NHLPA executive director Don Fehr said. “But his greatest legacy was off the ice. A true trailblazer in seeking to improve conditions for all players, Ted was instrumental in organizing the original players’ association in 1957. All players, past, current and future, are in his debt. All those who have, and will follow him into the NHL Jeff Carter Jersey , enjoy improved rights and benefits in large part due to the efforts he made.”The Hockey Hall of Fame waived its three-year waiting period when it inducted Lindsay in 1966, but he declined to attend the banquet because his wife and children were not welcome. The following year, the banquet was open to men and women.“That’s amazing,” Edmonton star Connor McDavid said as news of Lindsay’s death filtered out. “That just goes to show what he’s about and he was not afraid to stand up to anyone and stand up for what he believed in.”Born July 29, 1925, in Renfrew, Ontario, as the youngest of nine children, Lindsay joined the Red Wings in 1944. He led the NHL with 33 goals in 1947-48 and won the Art Ross Trophy for the most points in 1949-50 when he had 23 goals and a league-best 55 assists. In 1955, Lindsay scored four goals in a 7-1 victory over Montreal in Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Final.During his 14 seasons in Detroit, he led the team in goals only once. He led or tied for the team lead in penalty minutes 10 times, including his final season of 1964-65, when he was approaching 40 years old.Former Bruins player Milt Schmidt said Lindsay “probably was one of the most hated players in the National Hockey League” because of the way he came after other teams.“But every franchise would have given their right arm for Ted Lindsay,” he said.Lindsay retired following the 1959-60 season and focused on his automotive business. He came back for one more season with the Red Wings in 1964-65 and returned to Detroit as general manager in 1977 and remained in that role until 1980. During the 1980-81 season, he coached the team for 20 games. He was a familiar face around the Red Wings for decades after his retirement — and what a face. Pucks http://www.officialkings.com/authentic-adidas-jonathan-quick-jersey , fists and elbows took a toll on his face, leaving scratches and dents after uncountable numbers of stiches. Philadelphia Flyers are just trying to reset following a tumultuous week in which the organization saw major changes in the front office.A road win against their biggest rival was a good start.Dale Weise scored in the first minute of the third period Detroit Red Wings T-Shirts Authentic , and the Flyers held on for a 4-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday night.“This is a good stepping stone, as we know we haven’t had a lot of consistency,” Weise said. “This is a step in the right direction. I thought we had good contributions from everybody.”The Flyers, who started the day last in the Eastern Conference, fired general manager Ron Hextall earlier this week in addition to their assistant general manager and an assistant coach. The players responded on Saturday.Claude Giroux, Travis Konecny and Jakub Voracek also scored for the Flyers, who won for the second time in eight games. Anthony Stolarz stopped 30 shots for his first win since Dec. 11, 2016, at Detroit.“Changes at the rink, it’s never easy Detroit Red Wings Hoodies Authentic , but for us, it’s our job to prepare ourselves and move forward,” Stolarz said. “Hopefully this is the start of a nice little run.”Sidney Crosby scored his 14th for Pittsburgh, while Riley Sheahan also scored for the Penguins, who lost their second straight and seventh of 10. Casey DeSmith made 22 saves.“I think we beat ourselves and that’s unfortunate,” Penguins coach Mike Sullivan said. “It’s discouraging because I felt like we made great strides. We have high expectations from our group. We’re all responsible, so we have to make sure we do the necessary things to improve.”Weise gave Philadelphia a 3-2 lead 51 seconds into the third period with a short-handed goal. He beat DeSmith between the pads on the breakaway for his second goal this season.“I didn’t want to deke,” Weise said. “I missed one a couple weeks ago, so I had to shoot. It worked out well on fresh ice.”The Penguins have allowed a league-worst six short-handed goals. Along with the short-handed winner, Pittsburgh gave up three breakaways on Saturday.“We don’t have a conscience defensively when we’re on the ice on the power play Detroit Red Wings Hats Authentic ,” Sullivan said. “It’s simply inexcusable, and we talked about it. And it can’t happen. It’s hard to win when your power play gives up a goal like that in a game like this.”Stolarz kept the Flyers in front when he stopped Derek Grant on a short-handed breakaway later in the period. Voracek sealed it with an empty-netter.“(Grant) kind of covered the puck, so I kind of knew he was going to go low,” Stolarz said. “He kind of tried to chip it, I tried to take away the five-hole, and I was lucky to get enough on it.”It was the first meeting of the season between the cross-state rivals. It was also the first game since the Penguins swept the regular-season series and eliminated the Flyers in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs last spring.Crosby opened the scoring 39 seconds into the game. He finished a 2-on-1 with a one-timer on a pass from Jake Guentzel. Crosby, who recorded his 11th career hat trick Wednesday against Colorado, has 14 goals and 24 points in his last 16 games. Crosby and Guentzel are both riding a four-game point streak.Konecny evened the score when he beat DeSmith to the blocker side on a breakaway. Konecny has points in five of his last six games. The teams traded goals 1:03 apart in the second period. Sheahan gave Pittsburgh a brief lead and Giroux tied it on a one-timer from a sharp angle near the goal line.Weise came through for the Flyers in the third.“It’s huge to win in this building,” Weise said. “We have to start thinking about the next game. said plenty of goodbyes to his New York Rangers teammates during the organization’s rebuild Colorado Avalanche Hats Authentic , it was finally his time to go.The Rangers traded Hayes to the Winnipeg Jets ahead of the NHL’s trade deadline Monday for younger forward Brendan Lemieux, a 2019 first-round pick and a conditional 2020 fourth round pick they get only if the Jets win the Stanley Cup this spring. New York also traded defenseman Adam McQuaid to Columbus for defense prospect Julius Bergman and fourth- and seventh-round picks in this year’s draft. It wasn’t long ago the Rangers were gunning for a title. In the past two days, they have jettisoned all three of their major unrestricted free agents in Mats Zuccarello, Hayes and McQuaid.“We had a really good team and we had a serious chance at the Cup and we had a pretty good deep run,” Hayes said on a conference call. “I have nothing but respect for this organization and nothing but great memories here. It’s tough to leave a city like this and a team like this and the friendships that you build with some people, it’s definitely tough. But I’m excited to get going here.”Left behind are a handful of veterans on a team that got much younger since announcing a rebuilding effort over a year ago. Forward Chris Kreider survived this deadline with a year left on his contract, and franchise goaltender Henrik Lundqvist on Sunday was too choked up about the trade of Zuccarello to Dallas to address it.But this was all part of the plan, and now the Rangers have five picks in the first two rounds of the draft, cap space and young assets to turn things around quickly.“I think pretty much we knew what the prices would be (and) I would say we met or hopefully did better than our expectations Custom Colorado Avalanche Jerseys ,” general manager Jeff Gorton said. “I think a lot of opportunity for our team to get better hopefully in a relatively quick fashion.”The 26-year-old Hayes, who can become an unrestricted free agent July 1, has 14 goals and 28 assists in 51 games this season. John Tavares answered three questions about a resounding Toronto Maple Leafs victory before the attention turned to what was on everyone’s mind: the star center’s return to New York.Tavares spent nine seasons with the Islanders Conor Timmins Jersey Womens , including six as the team’s captain, before leaving as a free agent for the team he rooted for while growing up in the suburbs west of Toronto.“I fully embraced being an Islander,” said Tavares, who had a goal and an assist in the Maple Leafs’ 6-2 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Wednesday night. “I loved it and I gave it everything I had.”Many Islanders fans were disappointed Tavares left the team that made him the No. 1 overall pick in 2009, and he’s likely in for a less-than-friendly reception on Long Island on Thursday night when the Maple Leafs are in town for the first time this season.“I had every right to go through the process that I went through (in free agency),” Tavares said. “I tried to be open and honest when I made my decision. I had no idea what I was going to do until I made my decision. People can take it any way they want.“All I can do is control what I can control.”And right now, that’s helping the Maple Leafs win.Andreas Johnsson scored twice during Toronto’s four-goal outburst in a seven-minute stretch to open the second period and the Maple Leafs cruised past the Oilers. Mitch Marner added a goal and two assists, while William Nylander and Patrick Marleau each had a goal and an assist for Toronto. That’s what they did.”Oilers star Connor McDavid returned to the lineup after serving his two-game suspension for a hit to the head on Islanders defenseman Nick Leddy last week. Wednesday marked another homecoming for McDavid, who grew up in a suburb just north of Toronto and cheered for the Leafs as a kid.The 22-year-old had sat out three of Edmonton’s last four games — one with illness and two because of the suspension — with his team managing five of a possible six points. The Oilers came in with six out of a possible eight points in their last four outings, but were also just 3-8-4 over the last 15.Tied at 1 after the first period, the floodgates opened for Toronto at 1:09 when Marner redirected a perfect feed from Zach Hyman under Koskinen’s blocker for his 22nd goal of the season, and just his second in the last 14 games. The Leafs then went up 3-1 just 1:17 later when Johnsson finished off a pretty passing play with Kasperi Kapanen and Auston Matthews for his 18th.Nylander got in on the action on the power play at 4:50 when he ripped his fifth short-side upstairs on Koskinen, who gave way to Stolarz.Johnsson rounded out the seven-minute deluge on another man-advantage when he took a feed from Tavares in the slot and beat Stolarz through the pads for his second of the night.“The puck has been going in,” said Johnsson, who has four goals in his last four outings. “I’m going to keep working.”Tavares made it 6-1 with his 36th on a 5-on-3 power play 25 seconds into the third. [UPDATE]- Matthews confirmed to A to Z Sports that he quit on the team. You can see the text he sent them here.Rishard Matthews was absent from practice today. The reason given was personal. That’s weird Taywan Taylor Jersey , but it happens from time to time with a guy or two duringa season. Things took a weird turn tonight when Matthews posted this on his Instagram:The caption, in case it doesn’t show up for you, is “When Daddy’s home for good. That is unless someone Calls him to get off the couch.”Now we don’t know anything more than this at this point. Paul Kuharsky says this post is an accurate indicator that his time in Tennessee is over. My guess here is that Rishard hasn’t been happy with his usage through the first 3 weeks of the season and things came to a head in some fashion today. The wording of his Instagram post sounds like he will be released by the Titans because that is the only way a team could call him and get him off the couch. There is little doubt in my mind that teams will call because he has been productive the last couple of years. NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Marcus Mariota has shown flashes of brilliance during his brief NFL career. He had a perfect passer rating in his NFL debut and led a 19-point comeback for his first playoff victory. Now Mariota heads into his fourth season with only his fifth-year option on his contract guaranteed. It’s time for Mariota to consistently show what he can do, especially after the Titans hired a new coach in January to put the quarterback into an offense that better fits both his arm and legs.“I don’t focus on trying to prove anything,” Mariota said Wednesday. “I’ve just got to go out there and do my job.”Before the Titans make a long-term commitment with a much larger contract, Mariota starts a window Sunday in the season opener in Miami to show if he really is their franchise quarterback. Even though he has had to learn his third offense in four years, that hurdle may not help get him beyond the $20.9 million he is due in 2019.Mariota already has won 20 games, most by any quarterback in his first three years with the franchise since George Blanda won 28 in this team’s first three seasons. He also has a chance to become the franchise’s first quarterback to lead the team to the playoffs in back-to-back years since Steve McNair in 2002 and 2003.But Mariota is coming off a season where he had more interceptions (15) than touchdowns (13) for the first time in his career. He also has yet to play in all 16 games in a regular season. The Titans hired Mike Vrabel to replace Mike Mularkey in January , and Vrabel hired Matt LaFleur as his offensive coordinator and Pat O’Hara as quarterbacks coach. They worked with Mariota on widening his stance and tweaking his passing mechanics during the offseason to give him more balance when throwing, hoping that leads to improved accuracy.“He’s done a good job Jonnu Smith Jersey ,” O’Hara said. “He’s picked up a lot of good traits, and he feels good about it and he believes in it. We’re ready to go.”Mariota is ready to go. He missed last year’s trip to Miami, a 16-10 loss, with an injury.“This is what you work hard for,” Mariota said. “Everything that you’ve done this offseason, you have an opportunity to go out there and kind of show what you’ve done. I’m excited. I’m excited for this team and I look forward to the challenge.”Dolphins coach Adam Gase has the challenge of preparing for Mariota in a new offense with the Titans tipping nothing in the preseason.“It is difficult because there are a lot of options that can take place to where it could be just normal drop-back pass., it could be zone read, it could be play-action where if we’re not really doing a good job with our rush lanes and something opens up, he takes off,” Mariota said.Teammates insist Mariota has nothing to prove to them. This is the quarterback who threw a block for Derrick Henry in their comeback victory in Kansas City, a game where he also scored after catching his own pass.“I think Marcus is always cool and collected Jack Conklin Jersey ,” three-time Pro Bowl tight end Delanie Walker said. “He’s going to go out there and play his game. Again, we’re paid to make our quarterback look good. He’s going to need our help for that. We just need everybody to make plays, and Marcus will be all right.”Two-time Pro Bowl left tackle Taylor Lewan said Mariota already has shown plenty.“I think the confidence as never swayed anywhere other than we have full confidence in Marcus,” Lewan said. “He’s our quarterback. We’re very lucky to have him.”Vrabel takes a slightly different approach. The coach said every player and coach should be trying to prove his value every day.“That’s just the approach we have to take,” Vrabel said. “Every day we’re trying to prove our value to the team. If Marcus didn’t come to work tomorrow, everybody would notice. You never want to be a guy that when you didn’t show up for work or you were late, nobody really noticed.”NOTES: S Kendrick Lewis (foot) was the only player not to practice Wednesday. Even RT Jack Conklin (left knee) was among four Titans limited at practice, including LB Derrick Morgan (knee), LB Rashaan Evans (hamstring) and LB Harold Landry (ankle).
The Tennessee Titans are doing their best to help their young group of wide receivers grow up.General manager Jon Robinson's biggest personnel move before Tuesday's trade deadline was adding a fullback Dennis Kelly Jersey , not bolstering a receiving corps that includes a couple second-year players (Corey Davis and Taywan Taylor) and another (Tajae Sharpe) essentially in his second season after sitting out 2017 on injured reserve.Tight end Jonnu Smith also is in his second season after being drafted in the third round last year.Their youth is even more apparent after three-time Pro Bowl tight end Delanie Walker broke his right ankle in the season opener followed by veteran receiver Rishard Matthews being released at his request in September.Coach Mike Vrabel said the Titans are trying to help those receivers improve as quickly as possible."That's why you draft them is to play them and get them better," Vrabel said. "And so we just got to keep heading down that path of improving and making sure these guys understand where they fit in the scheme and how they can help us on third down."With the Titans at 3-4 and mired in a three-game skid, receivers need to start hanging on to more balls. The Titans have dropped 10 passes this season, according to Stats . That's 14th in the NFL but count much more in an offense 31st with only 126 total catches. Tennessee, which visits Dallas (3-4) on Monday night, is 30th in the league in passing offense. One drop on a would-be touchdown pass late Oct. 7 in Buffalo led to a 13-12 loss and cost Nick Williams his job. A couple more dropped passes came in their last game, a 20-19 loss to the Chargers in London. Receivers coach Rob Moore said they won't use youth as an excuse and have been working on technique, hand placement and getting the head around better to correct the problem."I believe that we have the guys in our room to get that done Warren Moon Jersey , and we just have to demonstrate that from week to week," Moore said during the bye week.Davis, the fifth overall pick in 2017, leads the Titans with 30 catches for 395 yards receiving. He had his best game with nine catches for 161 yards and a touchdown in Tennessee's overtime win over Philadelphia on Sept. 30. He's been held to a total of eight catches over the past three games.Sharpe was the first pick of the fifth round in 2016 and started 10 games as a rookie. He has started six games this season, and the 6-foot-2 receiver is coming off his best game yet after a career-high 101 yards receiving catching seven of nine passes thrown to him. Each catch earned the Titans a first down, and five of Sharpe's catches came on third down."He's found ways to kind of get open," Mariota said. "At the same time, he understands his routes. He understands the concepts. If we can find ways to kind of get everybody on the same page Steve McNair Jersey , just as Tajae is figuring it out, I think we can be even better on third down. I give credit to Tajae. I think he's done a great job of understanding his role and finding zones or beating his man on third down."Follow Teresa M. Walker at teresamwalkerWhere were you when the Music City Miracle happened? This week’s theme on the SB Nation NFL blogs is “where were you when...” The obvious choice for the this site is where were you when the Music City Miracle happened? I have told my story a bunch of times, but some people might not have heard it before, so here it goes again.I was a senior in high school in January of 2000. The Friday night before the game I was at a high school basketball game and my parents left the house for a little bit to take my sister somewhere after going to the grocery store. When they came back home, they realized someone had broken into our house. They didn’t end up getting much from the break in, other than a case of Moutain Dew my mom had just bought for me, but they really trashed the place. They dumped out every draw in the entire house. There was crap everywhere. We cleaned up some that night, but left most of it to be done on Saturday.Saturday morning I had a church league basketball game. I had a terrible game Eddie George Jersey , so I was pretty ticked off after that and the events of the night before. The Titans’ game was starting as I got in the car, so I listened to Mike Keith on the way home before sitting down in the den at my parents’ house to watch the rest of the game with my dad.The game takes me from ticked off to just plain ol’ depressed. If you were watching the game, you know what I am talking about. Steve Christie kicks a 41-yard field goal with 16 seconds left in the game to give the Bills a 16-15 lead. The season is over. I am looking around the room realizing that after all of this I have to spend the rest of the day cleaning up the house.Then....I still get goosebumbs and tears in my eyes watching that to this day. The next 10 minutes are so are a blur between the jumping around the living room, high-fiving my dad, and running up to the TV while they are showing the replay to prove that it was a lateral. If you watch the TV broadcast:It takes just under 4 minutes from when Kevin Dyson crosses the goal line for Phil Luckett to announce the play stands. It felt like a million years and 4 seconds all at the same time.Where were you when the Music City Miracle happened?
Sorry ladies and gents Ronald Jones Jersey , I was on vacation last week. Let’s get to it. After the Giants created an explosive play with Odell Beckham, Jr. for 41 yards, they found themselves down at the goal line. The 41-yard play wasn’t a coverage bust, it was just Beckham being more athletic than rookie Carlton Davis, and the safety Isaiah Johnson also not having the range/athleticism to do anything to affect the play. Two plays later, the Giants would score, this time on an obvious coverage bust:At the top of the screen right as the play starts you can see the Giants have three receivers and Bucs three defenders. Normally teams will do what is often referred to as a ‘banjo’ call, because trips bunch formations like this one often have rub routes. One defender takes the inside guy, one takes the middle, and the other takes whichever receiver goes outside. That is one way to cancel rub routes. Here, the play-action holds the linebackers while the corners each take their man who go inside (one tight end goes to sell the run fake), but no one takes Saquon Barkley who just sprints to the pylon. All around horrible defense. Blowing coverage would be the theme of the day. On the Bucs’ ensuing possession Ryan Fitzpatrick drove them into the Giants’ redzone, but the drive stalled at the five-yard line. On 4th and one, not only did the Bucs go for it, but they called a sneak. I think both were the right call. Unfortunately, the line didn’t get any push, and the Bucs turned it over on downs. On the Giants’ next possession, they again marched right down the field in chunksHow does no one cover the running back (Wayne Gallman)? You can see the Giants in a split-back formation, and the receivers cross after the snap, with the one aligned to Eli Manning’s right going underneath left and Gallman go right as the screen receiver. The safety comes down to play a robber role, but it just ends up being two defenders on the underneath receiver. To the top of the screen, both receivers run clear-out routes. The Bucs’ deep safety is put in no-man’s land. This is perhaps one of those instances where, in an effort to simplify the defense to help avoid busts, they eliminated a coverage check that might have helped here. But we are seeing this defense get out-schemed every week. Four plays later Barkley scored again, this time on a run play, and they did it beating Gerald McCoy and Jason Pierre-Paul.Getting out-scored 14-0 in the first quarter is losing football. The Bucs’ defense is so bad it ruins everything. This Giants offense is average at best.On the Bucs’ next possession, we see the other thing holding this team back: their offensive line. This play was on 2nd-and-2.Donovan Smith has been better this season than last season. At times he’s even played at a high level; easily his best football. But as the season has worn on, Smith’s play has regressed. Is that due to injury? It’s hard to say. But here, as he often has in past seasons, Smith fails to block the backside defender, who blows this up. The play would have likely failed anyway because tight end Antony Auclair also failed to make his block on the playside. On zone runs the whole offensive line must play as one cohesive unit, and if one guy doesn’t execute his assignment, the whole play is usually busted. With busts both backside and playside, the play had no chance. It happens. What I don’t understand is why the Bucs continue to call zone runs when virtually every time someone can’t execute their block. It’s frustrating, because it feels like throwing plays away. It’s great to be multiple, but you shouldn’t be multiple just for its own sake. If you can’t run it, stop calling it.That means the very next play, 3rd-and-8, was an obvious passing situation. Here’s the other coin to the offensive line’s issues - pass protection. Fitzpatrick gets sacked and the Bucs are forced to punt. The first two weeks, the offensive line was perfect (along with Peyton Barber’s pass blocking). That’s one of the main reasons Fitzpatrick was able to have historically good performances. But teams figured out the Bucs’ offensive line can’t handle stunts. Specifically right guard Caleb Benenoch. Since then defenses are constantly running end/tackle stunts or tackle/tackle stunts, as the Giants do on this play. Right tackle Demar Dotson has been one of the best right tackles in the league for years, but in recent years we have seen his play slowly regress as age and injuries catch up to him. Here, he stops his feet and is beat to the edge from a wide-9 alignment by the defender. Benenoch again blows the stunt, and Fitzpatrick goes down as both defenders meet at the quarterback. On the Bucs’ next possession they did get good pass protection and Fitzpatrick eventually ran it in for a touchdown on a broken play. Later, right before halftime, Fitzpatrick threw an interception while in field goal range, and the Bucs went to the half down 14-7. The third quarter was a house of horrors for the Bucs. The Bucs received the ball, and on their second play, Fitzpatrick throws another interception. I think this might be another one of those fake RPOs. Fitzpatrick pulls the ball M.J. Stewart Jersey , but because of the unblocked defender he has to change his arm angle to get the ball around, and consequently the ball is too far out in front. The defender beats DeSean Jackson to the spot on the slant because Jackson was jogging on his route. He either took the play off, or perhaps didn’t expect the ball, especially as quickly as it came. And then there’s some bad luck (also great effort by the second arriving defender) that the ball didn’t hit the ground. Too many pick-sixes this year. If I remember correctly, that’s at least two for Fitzpatrick and one for Winston this season. On the Bucs’ next possession, Fitzpatrick again drives them down into field goal range, and just like before the half, throws another interception, making three-in-a-row. In my opinion this is both a poor decision and a bad throw by Fitzpatrick. Should have placed it outside in the corner, but he just launches a jump ball that Jackson loses. Also, it’s worth noting Benenoch gets put on skates and Fitzpatrick can’t properly step into the throw, but I don’t think it really matters. The Bucs arguably should have been leading at this point, but by the time they get the ball back they were down 24-7. Turnovers and poor defense. Fitzpatrick got yanked for Jameis Winston. Winston played well the rest of the way, throwing for 200 yards, two touchdowns, one interception with just 20 seconds left, and over 12 yards per attempt. Winston got the Bucs to within 3 points at 31-28 with five minutes remaining, and again with 3 with 2:20 remaining. But the defense couldn’t stop the Giants, giving up 24 points in the second half and 14 in the 4th quarter. What is Las Vegas thinking about the Buccaneers and Eagles game this weekend? Last week, Vegas was thinking a Saints blowout, but was way off in that prediction. In no way am I a professional gambler, and in no way am I telling you to put your money with what I predict. This is really just for fun and something we here at Bucs Nation thought the readers would enjoy after sports gambling was legalized. For those that don’t know sports gambling, I will quickly go over the three main bets that are often placed. Also, the lines could always change and the website you use, could be different from another one. Betting with the spread: Currently, the Buccaneers are +3 陆 . This means that if you were to take the Buccaneers with the spread, they could lose by 3 points and you’d win. On the opposite side, if you took the Eagles at -3 陆 , they’d have to win by 4 for you to win the bet. Spread bets always have the same odds, which are -110. This means that you need to risk $110 to win $100. Money line bets: As of Friday evening, the Eagles are -170, while the Buccaneers are +150. In money line bets, all the team you bet on has to do is win. In terms of what the -170 means for the Saints, you’d have to risk $170 dollars just to win $100. The Buccaneers at +150, meaning that a $100 dollar bet would win you $150 dollars. This is a big difference from last week, where the Buccaneers were +440.Over/Under bets: Again, no matter what way you pick, the odds in this case are -110. Vegas sports books currently have the over under at 44 陆 total points scored . If you take the over, the Bucs and Eagles must combined to score 45 points in order for you to win. Obviously, the under is 44 or under. So now we get to the part where I try and beat Vegas. Last week, I picked Tampa Bay at +9 陆 (won), but i also picked the under 49 陆 (lost). Current record on the season is 1-1. I will keep a tracker all season of how I am doing.A few things to consider. Philadelphia is 16-2 straight up (money line) in it’s last 18 games and 6-1 straight up on the road in their last seven. The total has gone UNDER in five of the last six games Tampa Bay has played at home, but the total has gone OVER in four of the last five matchups between the Eagles and Bucs.Just like last week, the public is leaning towards the Eagles. According to Oddshark.com 58% of the public is taking the Saints at -3 陆. Heavy bets have been coming in on the OVER of 44 陆.My picks: Buccaneers at +150 and the under over 44 陆. It’s Tampa Bay’s home opener and I believe they will win the game. The Buccaneers have momentum to carry over from last week’s win and unlike other week two’s, I think they do that this season. Tampa Bay starts 2-0 for the first time since 2010. I picked the over simply because Tampa will score points, but so will the Eagles. Ryan Smith and two rookie corners are playing this weekend. That’s a recipe for disaster, but like last week, “Fitzmagic” will outscore Foles.
DeSean Jackson wasn't looking forward to the film review of Tampa Bay's third straight loss.He already knew the missed scoring opportunities would be the most painful part of the Buccaneers' 34-29 loss to the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday.Too many times Ryan Smith Jersey , the Buccaneers (2-3) whiffed when given an opportunity to keep up with the Falcons' scoring pace."If you want to win in the NFL, you can't afford that," Jackson said. "Once again, three consecutive games. A terrible feeling. I'm very disappointed and we've got to figure it out."Three plays will be especially difficult for Jackson and his teammates to watch:— In the second quarter, quarterback Jameis Winston tried to connect with Jackson on a deep pass from the Atlanta 47. Jackson had no chance on the overthrown pass that was intercepted by Damontae Kazee at the Atlanta 1.— In the third quarter, Winston's pass from the Atlanta 7 intended for Chris Goodwin in the end zone was deflected and then intercepted by Brian Poole .— Finally, with time for only one play from the Falcons 21, the Buccaneers pulled out a trick play instead of throwing to the end zone. Winston ran up the middle, close to the 10. He then pitched the ball to Adam Humphries, who bobbled and juggled the ball for a brief moment before pushing it to Mike Evans, who made a jump-pass on a bounce toward Jackson, but Jackson couldn't make the catch.Jackson might have had an open lane to the end zone and a possible game-winning touchdown if the ball had bounced into his hands. Instead, it went out of bounds as the final seconds left the clock.Jackson said he might have successfully fielded the ball "if I was playing baseball, if I was playing Major League Baseball."His anguish was obvious as pulled off his helmet, kicked the pylon and kept walking to the end zone in front of cheering Falcons fans."No way we should have lost to this team," Jackson said. "We're a way better team than what we showed today. It's frustrating. We work so hard and we've got so many great Chris Conte Jersey , talented guys in here. We have to figure out a way. The last three games we haven't won so that's the frustrating part."Winston said the Bucs wouldn't have had to depend on the wild, final play if they had taken advantage of other scoring chances."For me personally, it's just about execution, so we don't have to put ourselves in that position," Winston said. "We're going to have games where things go our way ... but you're going to have some of those bounces and those bumps. You have to overcome those bumps and I think that's what we can do with this game. We have to get over this. We have to put this game behind us."Winston completed 30 of 41 passes for 395 yards and four touchdowns in his first start of the season, but he also threw two interceptions."Yes, it was a tough loss in the division, but we're still in a good spot," he said. "It's still the beginning of the season and we have to execute better, I have to protect the football and we will win games." The Buccaneers don’t have a head coach right now, but they do have an offensive coordinator and the Jets are reportedly interested in talking to him about their own head coaching vacancy.According to multiple reports, the team has requested permission to interview Buccaneers offensive coordinator Todd Monken. Albert Breer of SI.com reported over the weekend that Monken is on an expiring contract, but until it is expired teams still need to ask for permission.Monken called the plays for all but one game in Tampa this season and the Buccaneers wound up 12th in the league in points and third in the league in yards. He was the offensive coordinator in 2016 and 2017 without calling plays and came to Tampa after three years as the head coach at Southern Miss.Given the need to develop Sam Darnold in the years to come, the Jets’ interest in Monken and other offensive coaches is easy to understand. It’s also possible that a head coaching interview could lead to another job on the staff when all is said and done.
Talking Aaron Rodgers and the Packers offense with Acme Packing Company The San Francisco 49ers travel to face the Green Bay Packers on Monday Mike Person Jersey , in a matchup that will present a serious challenge to the young 49ers defense. There’s not much left to be said about Aaron Rodgers at this point, but it has been a bit of a struggle for the Packers offense the first five weeks. They rank in the middle of the pack in points scored, and Rodgers has openly expressed frustration about the inconsistency of the group.I chatted with Acme Packing Company writer Jason Hirschhorn this week in preparation for the game and wanted to get his thoughts on the state of the Packers offense. On Friday, he talked about the strengths and weaknesses of the defense. Today, he gets into the offense. While Green Bay does indeed rank seventh in offensive efficiency by DVOA entering Week 6, that mark gives a misleading impression. Prior to last week’s tilt in Detroit, the Packers ranked right in the middle of the league (No. 14). That game saw them get behind 24-0 before halftime, at which point the Lions simply played to prevent quick scores and gave up a lot of easy yardage underneath. In a more typical game script, a considerable amount of those easy conversions wouldn’t have transpired, and the Packers’ offensive DVOA ranking wouldn’t have made that leap into the top 10.And that underscores Aaron Rodgers’ apparent frustrations. The offense does do some things that work, but it doesn’t maximize the talent at its disposal. For example Adrian Colbert Jersey , Aaron Jones leads all qualified players with 5.67 yards per carry since the start of 2017, outpacing Alvin Kamara and Matt Breida for the top mark. And yet, head coach Mike McCarthy gave him fewer snaps this past week than Jamaal Williams and Ty Montgomery, two players with inferior running ability. Jones doesn’t cure everything wrong with the Packers offense, but he would give the unit a playmaker it needs in the backfield.Personnel usage doesn’t represent the entire problem. Unlike some of the league’s best offenses, the Packers haven’t adopted enough ways to manufacture easy completions for the quarterback. That hasn’t killed Green Bay given the presence of Rodgers, but it puts considerable strain on him when multiple key members of the receiving corps miss time and the offensive line struggles. Absent meaningful adjustments to the scheme, this could prove the final blow to the McCarthy era in Green Bay.Looking at the 49ers drops against the Cardinals There are many things that can frustrate fans in the San Francisco 49ers loss to the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday, but a lot of the threads of frustration connect to the offense. And nothing was more infuriating than the drops. Per Pro Football Focus, there were a total of six drops committed by the 49ers. Three for Pierre Gar莽on, and one each for the trio of George Kittle Brock Coyle Jersey , Kendrick Bourne, and Cole Wick. Gar莽on tied Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Michael Crabtree for most drops Sunday. It is worth noting Gar莽on entered the game with one drop through the first four games. The drops themselves wouldn’t be so maddening if they were simply drops, but that’s just too easy, now isn’t it? They wound up producing awful consequences. One of Gar莽on’s drops could be better classified as self-batted pass that landed in the hands of a Cardinals defender. Was it catchable? After rewatching the game (don’t get me started), the pass looks like it could have been caught if not for Gar莽on getting tripped up at the last (and perfect) minute which may have messed with his timing. The other two were just bad. One was a low-thrown ball, but still catchable for a first down. The other may have been a bit behind, but Gar莽on should have been able to turn and catch it. It would have been another first down if he did. The Kendrick Bourne drop teetered on the realm of unacceptable. Bourne had a nice path to make a lateral move and cut down the field for a first down. The pass hit him right in the numbers and bounced in the air for what could have been an easy interception if defenders were placed right. Those are catches you need to make if you want to keep your job. That brings us to the Cole Wick drop. On 3rd and goal on the 49ers’ 1-yard line, C.J. Beathard throws an absolute dart that had everyone thinking Cole Wick caught it. By everyone, I mean everyone because the foghorn that plays for every 49ers touchdown at Levi’s Stadium even started a brief rumble before it was apparent Wick dropped it. As one of the more maddening drops, at least Beathard was able to get the ball into Trent Taylor’s hands a play later—good teams can at least do that. And finally, the George Kittle drop. The Wick drop probably wins for worse drop of the day Richard Sherman Jersey , but the Kittle drop is up there. For a two point conversion, Beathard threw another dart that looked locked into Kittle’s bicep, and then it fell out. It was yet another catch he should have had. It was a catch you thought he had for a brief moment. The 49ers have had drop issues for several games and they are going to need to get these fixed if they are ever going to be competitive. C.J. Beathard went 34 for 54 on Sunday, which gives him a 62 completion percentage. Had those six drops not happened, Beathard’s numbers would have shot up to a near 75 completion percentage. And yes folks, that’s very good for anyone, not just C.J. Beathard. Catch the [site decorum] ball!
The San Francisco 49ers continue to deny interview opportunities for assistant coaches. The latest is wide receivers coach and passing game coordinator Mike LaFleur. The team told the Green Bay Packers Solomon Thomas Jersey , Cleveland Browns, and Minnesota Vikings they could not interview LaFleur, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The Packers hired LaFleur’s brother, Matt, to be head coach. This news follows word earlier this week that the 49ers shot down the Broncos request to interview quarterbacks coach Rich Scangarello, and multiple requests for run game coordinator Mike McDaniel. Matt Maiocco tweeted that position coaches generally are on “rolling two-year deals.” All three of those assistants joined the 49ers in 2017 when Kyle Shanahan was hired.I imagine most coaches at some point want an opportunity to advance. At the same time, if Jimmy Garoppolo and Jerick McKinnon are healthy in 2019, the stock for all three of these assistants could continue to rise. The offense ideally takes a sizable step forward in 2019, and even if not all these assistants are directly responsible, the proverbial rising tide lifts all boats. It is also worth noting that sometimes a team will cover for an assistant, saying they are declining an interview when in reality the assistant does not want the job and does not want to decline it himself. Not every promotion opportunity is a good one, and so this can let a coach not look like he’s turning his nose up at a job. We’ll likely never know for sure how much that is the case for the 49ers assistants.49ers Super Bowl odds climb slightly following win over Lions The San Francisco 49ers beat the Detroit Lions this past Sunday, and while it was not a pretty win, it was a win nonetheless. And as is the case, when a team wins a game, usually their Super Bowl odds improve. A week after falling from 20/1 to 33/1, the 49ers improved to 28/1 at Bovada. The Baltimore Ravens Ahkello Witherspoon Jersey , Carolina Panthers, and Houston Texans all climbed ahead of the 49ers after Week 1, but with all three losing, they dropped behind San Francisco. Meanwhile, the 49ers travel to face the Kansas City Chiefs, who are climbing the board. In May, you could get the Chiefs at 40/1. They were 25/1 heading into week 1, and after consecutive wins, now stand at 12/1. They are tied with the Green Bay Packers and Philadelphia Eagles. The top of the board includes the Los Angeles Rams (13/2), New England Patriots (13/2), Jacksonville Jaguars (9/1), and Minnesota Vikings (9/1).If you’re still shopping around for Super Bowl odds, the 49ers are probably going to slip a notch this week. They could very well upset the Chiefs, but going on the road against that high powered offense is going to be a tough one. They follow that up with a road game against the Los Angeles Chargers. While LA will likely be without Joey Bosa, it’s a tough one to handicap for the time being.Football Outsiders dropped their latest playoff odds. The 49ers saw a 4.7 percent increase in their playoff chances, while the Seattle Seahawks dropped 11.1 percent and dropped behind them in the NFC West. FO also offers odds on landing the top pick and a top five pick in the upcoming NFL Draft. The 49ers currently rank eighth in both categories.
